Petition for Review of Prairie View HS Boys Basketball Program Leadership

We, the undersigned parents and guardians, respectfully submit this petition requesting a formal review of Coach Doug Nelson’s conduct and performance as the current basketball coach at Prairie View High School.
Our concerns center around repeated instances in which Coach Nelson has failed to meet the expected standards of professionalism, leadership, and adherence to the organization’s code of conduct. Specifically, there have been multiple occasions where communication directed toward student-athletes has been perceived as demeaning, disrespectful, and not reflective of the positive, supportive environment that youth sports programs are intended to promote.
In addition, effective coaching requires the ability to maintain appropriate control of the team while also earning the respect of the players. Based on observations and feedback from student-athletes, there are ongoing concerns that Coach Nelson has been unable to consistently demonstrate these essential leadership qualities. This has contributed to a decline in team morale, engagement, and overall player experience.
Furthermore, there is growing concern that student-athletes are becoming discouraged from participating in the basketball program due to their experiences. We have observed and received feedback indicating that some students are choosing not to play or are considering leaving the program altogether. This trend is negatively impacting participation, team culture, and the long-term strength and reputation of the Prairie View High School basketball program.
As parents and supporters of these student-athletes, we believe that coaching should foster development, confidence, teamwork, and respect. While accountability and discipline are important, they must be delivered in a constructive and appropriate manner. The current pattern of behavior raises concerns about the overall mental health, well-being and experience of the players.
Based on these concerns, we respectfully request that appropriate leadership or governing officials conduct a thorough review of this matter and take necessary action, including Coach Doug Nelson’s removal from his position, to ensure that all coaching staff uphold the standards and values expected within the program.
Our administrations primary goal should be to ensure a safe, respectful, and encouraging environment where all student-athletes can grow both on and off the court. In addition to athletic development and success, a coach should serve as a positive role model and work to build strong character in young men. Based on our concerns, we do not believe this standard is currently being met, as Coach Nelson is not consistently demonstrating the leadership and example expected both on and off the court.

My grandchildren are athletes and I believe in discipline but not at the point of abuse! Whether that abuse is physical, mental, emotional or verbal it is not allowed!!! Our children deserve the same respect we ask of them!
He spoke down on multiple people throughout the season. He made me hate a sport I love
A coach is supposed to build people up, not break them down. When someone in that role consistently treats others with disrespect, acts out of immaturity, and puts their own ego ahead of the team, they lose the right to lead. Those actions don’t just affect performance on the court —they chip away at players’ confidence, both in the game and in themselves. Leadership requires accountability, patience, and respect, and without those, the damage done far outweighs any potential success. And it proven in performance in game. He made me a worse player and person.
With a son playing in middle school, Id love to see this resolved before he makes his way to high school!!
The way he would yell at us during half time instead of speaking to us telling us what we could do better and the way he drove players to quit because of there physical stature
Mr. Smith would have never allowed this.

Sorry u guys are still dealing with this liar. Lied directly to my face about words he said about my son. The a.d. even called my kid in after the season to apologize for “his guys”actions. Nothing was ever done. Guess that’s how it goes when it’s “his guy”. Both need to go immediately. So glad my kids are out of that situation all together.
