We, the undersigned parents and guardians, respectfully submit this petition requesting a formal review of Coach Doug Nelson’s conduct and performance as the current basketball coach at Prairie View High School.

Our concerns center around repeated instances in which Coach Nelson has failed to meet the expected standards of professionalism, leadership, and adherence to the organization’s code of conduct. Specifically, there have been multiple occasions where communication directed toward student-athletes has been perceived as demeaning, disrespectful, and not reflective of the positive, supportive environment that youth sports programs are intended to promote.

In addition, effective coaching requires the ability to maintain appropriate control of the team while also earning the respect of the players. Based on observations and feedback from student-athletes, there are ongoing concerns that Coach Nelson has been unable to consistently demonstrate these essential leadership qualities. This has contributed to a decline in team morale, engagement, and overall player experience.

Furthermore, there is growing concern that student-athletes are becoming discouraged from participating in the basketball program due to their experiences. We have observed and received feedback indicating that some students are choosing not to play or are considering leaving the program altogether. This trend is negatively impacting participation, team culture, and the long-term strength and reputation of the Prairie View High School basketball program.

As parents and supporters of these student-athletes, we believe that coaching should foster development, confidence, teamwork, and respect. While accountability and discipline are important, they must be delivered in a constructive and appropriate manner. The current pattern of behavior raises concerns about the overall mental health, well-being and experience of the players.

Based on these concerns, we respectfully request that appropriate leadership or governing officials conduct a thorough review of this matter and take necessary action, including Coach Doug Nelson’s removal from his position, to ensure that all coaching staff uphold the standards and values expected within the program.

Our administrations primary goal should be to ensure a safe, respectful, and encouraging environment where all student-athletes can grow both on and off the court. In addition to athletic development and success, a coach should serve as a positive role model and work to build strong character in young men. Based on our concerns, we do not believe this standard is currently being met, as Coach Nelson is not consistently demonstrating the leadership and example expected both on and off the court.
