Petition for a Full-time Veterinarian in Grand Turk
Description
We, the undersigned, are concerned about the lack of a full-service veterinarian located on the island of Grand Turk. As a small island with a significant population of animals (including dogs, cats, horses, donkeys, pigs, chickens, etc.), it is essential to have a dedicated veterinary professional with the necessary resources to provide critical care for both the large and small animals of Grand Turk and Salt Cay.
Currently, the nearest veterinarian is located on Providenciales, about 90 miles from GT, making it extremely difficult and expensive for residents to access the care their animals need. There is no emergency care for animals in distress, leading to delays in treatment and possible death.
Benefits of a Full-time Veterinarian- Improved access to veterinary care for all residents
- Increased awareness of animal health and welfare issues
- Prevention of disease outbreaks among the animal population
- Better management of the island's wildlife population
- Food safety for the population, including inspection of prison farm animals (49 pigs, 30 goats, 1,500 chickens)

I have been on Grand Turks. They need to geld those stallions, and fix the dogs. You see scars on the Donkeys from dog pack attacks. And a local said the dogs kill the baby donkeys. Very sad to see Equines on an Island with very little forage.
This is much needed on Grand Turk. The TCSPCA does their best but they can’t provide full time care as they’re a charity. The Government needs to step up and provide the care the animals of Grand Turk deserve.
It truly is so needed. Not just for donkeys, but for all animals on the island. Controlling the puppy population is also important. Finding homes for all of the puppies being born is hard enough. It’s almost impossible without a veterinarian on island. It’s a trickling effect.
It is crucial to have a FULL TIME vet on Grand Turk with experience and knowledge of large animals who can also allocate time to Salt Cay where there are also many donkeys and cows in need of medical care.
I lived on GT for 4.5 months and was shocked at neglect of the animals (both owned and not). Dead dogs, stray dogs with severe injuries, etc. There needs to be better vet access for this island as not everyone can afford to fly to the main island just for vet care.
Help the animals.

As a long term visitor and home owner in TCI , the importance of this is critical. Not only for the health and welfare of animals but oversight of the impact on public health as more people try to raise animals for food production.
