We, the undersigned are petitioning the city of Ottawa to build a fence around the grassy area at the exit of Westcliffe Park (on Seyton near Westcliffe) beside the apartment building (Hammill Court Apartments), to allow for a dog park.

This would include a double-gated entrance, as well as a structure to place the waste. There are similar structures all over Canada. A wooden bin with a cover and cans inside would be provided for waste, as well as two shovels.

A volunteer-based waste bag container could also be instituted to eliminate waste.

While Bruce Pit may be close, many residents do not wish to use it due to its large size and it is not within walking distance.

Most green spaces in Bells Corners are not the most welcoming for pet owners - NCC Trails in swampy areas forbid dogs and Westcliffe Park as a whole is not dog friendly. Despite this, many residents end up using Westcliffe Park, which is not ideal as some dogs may get loose (and have) and go into the play structures which may not be safe or desirable for children and adults for various reasons, which are understandable.

People with dogs that need more physical activity could make great use of this empty and unused space while ensuring safety for everyone. Many residents in the area allow their dogs to socialize and play together – this initiative would provide just a spot for that.

Thank you,

im hearing from so many of you who are tired of worrying about dogs slipping off leashes near the playground. i have been emailing with someone at the city office and while they are being slow they at least acknowledge we have a point about safety.

i honestly cant believe how fast this is moving and how much energy there is for a safe spot for our dogs. reading your comments about why you need this space really confirms that we are doing the right thing for the neighborhood.

I would love to have a fenced in dog area close by as I dont own a vehicle nor have a fenced in back yard for them to run in.

I'm not a dog owner but I visited a similar dog park in Toronto with friends and it looks like a great use of public space.

Westcliffe area of Bells Corners would benefit significantly from a fenced in dog park. It would allow residents of the area to exercise their pets responsibly and without suffering the fears at Bruce Pit. A well exercised pet is a happy and well behaved pet. It would be perfect for this seemingly unused plot of land to be converted for the love of our 4-legged family members.

I would love to take my dog to this enclosed area! Bruce pit is not totally fenced in which allows my dog ( and I'm sure many) wander onto to the parking lot! Also, many people do not have big fenced in backyards so this would be perfect!

I would love a closer fenced in area that I could use. I have used the one on earl Armstrong near the fire department. The distance walking in Bruce Pitt is too hard for me.

I think that Westcliffe really needs this dog park and there is space for it. I hafe lived where dog parks were very successful and the location is walkable. I would like to see separate fencing for small dogs and large dogs to provide security for all breeds as has been done in many models elsewhere.
