We, the citizens of Bayside Council, Victoria (“the Council”) together with business owners and employees within the Council area, respectfully petition the Council to urgently install pedestrian gates on the railway crossing next to St Joan of Arc Primary School on the corner of New St and Dendy St, Brighton. Despite the close proximity of this crossing to the Primary School, and its frequent and daily use by children, there are no automatic pedestrian gates to prevent crossing by pedestrians when the flashing lights and warning sounds are activated ahead of oncoming trains. In our view, this is a fatal accident waiting to happen, potentially involving children and their parents.
We urge the Council to install pedestrian gates as a matter of urgency, as currently exists in Bay St and Church St Brighton, and elsewhere in the Bayside Council suburbs.

Reaching this point has been an exhausting uphill climb but seeing the momentum grow confirms that I am not alone in fearing for the safety of our children. This progress does not make the work ahead any easier or the risk at the crossing any smaller. Please keep pushing because we have come too far to turn back now.

My parents who have hearing loss fetch my children from school across these tracks. The roads feeding into the roundabout are hard enough to cross on foot - the rail crossing amplifies the danger. Please protect community members as a priority.
This crossing is so dangerous that I am petrified going across with my 3 kids. I cannot believe this has not been fixed sooner.
This intersection is a disaster waiting to happen. I cant believe nothing has been done to secure the crossing despite the fact a school is within 30 metres of the trainline. It took a fatalities at the New St & Church St crossings for safety upgrades to be instigated at these intersections. Lets not allow a terrible accident occur that can be clearly avoided.
I watched as a young girl from St Joan of Arc crossed over on her bike after one train had passed, another came along narrowly missing her. That day there was a near miss but it could easily have been a fatality, one that the school community would never be able to recover from.
This intersection is one of Bayside's busiest ajacent to schools and child care as well as being a cross road of two busy bicycle lanes. It simply MUST have controlled pedestrian gates before a terrible accident occurs
We need to make change, with this petition getting as many signs as possible.
We need BOOM GATES! they will keep everyone safer it is a big risk for anybody! Please help

These gates can not come soon enough. I witness a Yr 6 school girl almost get hit by a train two months ago. She walked straight through with an oncoming train fast approaching. This train crossing is used daily by children from two primary schools and one Child Care Centre. I am in disbelief that there are no pedestrian gates there. This is a matter of urgency.
