We, UMass’s students, staff, faculty and community members, call on President Caret and the UMass Board of Trustees to honor all settled union contracts and pay all negotiated wage increases immediately.
We are staunch supporters of public higher education and of UMass. But at this time—when UMass received over $521,000,000 in state appropriations in 2014-2015 (which amounts to an over 8.5% increase from last year); when Governor Baker, former Governor Patrick and the Legislature have all stated that these funds should cover all negotiated raises; and when the UMass Board of Trustees approved a compensation package totaling $952,000 by 2018 for the President of UMass—the University should honor its contracts with all UMass employees and honor its promise to Massachusetts families not to raise tuition and fees.

Be fair to UMass employees. We work hard and deserve our raises! UMass employee families deserve an education without constant tuition and fee hikes which outweigh the 'tuition reimbursement' benefit.

President Caret: We know that you know this is the right thing to do. What a great start for you as new President it would be for you to come through on our negotiated contract and to do so without raising tuition and fees. Respectfully yours -- EM

The delays in retroactive raises resulted in a loss of $40,000 in a grant I was negotiating from the DoD. The delays are creating a financial burden due to lost funding and declining competitiveness.

I never imagined having to deal with this sort of petty nonsense over such a minimal and long-overdue pay increase! It's just insulting, especially considering the long hours we are all expected to work and the lack of sufficient support staff!

The need to battle for raises that were promised previously is absurd. It will create challenges for the university in attracting and retaining talented employees, if the administration continues to withhold our pay.
