The petition for street closure is being requested for the alley located between North West 18th Avenue & North West 17th Avenue, and between North West 36th Street & North West 35th Street. Directly behind the Allapattah branch Library.

The purpose of the street closure is to keep our community safe, and clean. Currently the alley is open to passing cars. It is used for illegal parking, speeding, sales of illegal substances, and dumping of trash and junk accumulation, and access for vagabonds. Due to these utilizations, back streets are frequently overlooked or disregarded by the overall population; why focus on them on the off chance that you can't utilize them? Be that as it may, networks everywhere throughout the world are retaking rear entryways as incredible open spaces, and we think Allapattah can and ought to stick to this same pattern! This initiative isn’t only about beautification; it presents the perfect opportunity to expand on the huge development already happening in Allapattah. With more pedestrians socializing and mingling in the Alley, means more business for local retailers.

Our goal is to close the alley and convert it into a safe environment for the children and business owners in the strip & daycare located behind the alley, as well as the visitors of the Library. It will include a glimpse of the Dominican Culture honoring the Dominican Community in Allapattah. A play area for the children, and a seating / picnic area for the parents and families to enjoy. It has been proven that where there is a high volume of people and activities the sale of illegal drugs and use are decreased drastically. By creating a green family fun space, we are driving the delinquents out, and bringing something positive to our neighborhood.

Alleys can contribute around 50% of additional public space to the city creating a new network for pedestrians.

Updates

I have submitted a formal request for a meeting with the local municipal office to discuss the alleyway site plan. We are currently compiling a detailed report on the specific illicit activities reported near the library to present as evidence for the closure. Expect a summary of their initial feedback once the preliminary review process completes.

The response to the proposal for the Allapattah alleyway has reached a level that necessitates a formal meeting with the district city planner. I am currently finalizing a briefing document that outlines our safety concerns and the proposed cultural installation to present at this session.

I grew up in this area... we need people to not see an alley but a place where they can incorporate culture

This area needs to change. Too much traffic and trash behind the library for years now. Lets clean it up.

I am very hopeful that this will happen. The Dominican community has been promised so much, but it's been nothing but broken promises.
