  1. First, we request an in-person law school only graduation with a remote option for those who cannot quarantine or submit a negative PCR test before attending.
  2. We feel that paying nearly $200 for a cap and gown to merely sit at home and send in a picture is inconsiderate and extremely financially burdensome. An in-person option would make the cost worthwhile.
  3. For future planning of this 2021 commencement we demand adequate representation from our class be present for all decision making.
  4. If any of these requests are absolutely unattainable and there are no other reasonable options, the graduating class should be informed before an official decision is made in order to prevent another outcry.

Updates

March 2, 2021

The volume of support has secured us a meeting with the administration later this week. I am currently drafting a formal proposal to ensure student representatives are included in all future graduation planning sessions.

I don't see why needing temperature checks and PCR tests are reasons why we can't have graduation at the Pleasantville campus. Those do not seem like unattainable goals

My issue with this situation is that my graduation RSVP has been presented as being tied to my purchase of a $140 cap and gown that I would not even wish to pay for if graduating virtually.

Paying 200 bucks to walk across my living room rug is a joke. Just let us have a real ceremony already.

While I wholeheartedly contend that graduation ceremonies are torturous affairs and not at all worth while, I believe that if these good folks want to suffer through that than goddammit they ought to be able to. #DontTreadOnMe #AndrewCuomoMustResign

I would also recommend that if we are denied an in-person graduation, we should receive our caps and gowns for free. The fact that we have to pay 140 dollars for a cap and gown to sit in front of a computer is insulting. Moreover, the school will save money by making the decision to not host a graduation; that money should be used to give back to the students.

I also don’t understand why they want us to pay 200$ for a gown just so we could sit at home- unreasonable and absolutely inconsiderate!

Personally, I ordered the cap and gown as a keepsake and to take my own photos, so I wouldn’t want them to completely eliminate the opportunity to purchase them. We should be able purchase cap and gowns if we want to, unlike the Class of 2020. I think there should be a second survey done, listing the only available venue and it’s restrictions to determine the amount of students who wouldn’t mind getting a PCR test prior to the graduation and taking their temperature at the ceremony. Students that don’t mind the restrictions and requirements should be able to attend an in-person ceremony - similar to how we are not allowed on campus without certain testing results submitted. That decision to agree to the restrictions should be almost binding unless the student has an emergency or they have a positive test result so that they are able to prepare the venue for the amount of students that would like to attend in-person. Students that are not willing to take the PCR test / get their temperature taken, should have the option to attend virtually and also be given the individual recognition during the ceremony. There could be an option of submitting an appropriate headshot / professional photo with sizing and or background restrictions so that it is uniform, instead of solely cap and gown photos for those that don’t want to purchase it. The world is so much more educated about COVID this time around, I just really hope there is a way to sort this all out so that we can walk the stage and celebrate this big accomplishment before having to study for the bar! :(
