Dear Kinesiology Faculty,

I am writing this letter in regard to the lack of recognition and celebration for the 2020 Kinesiology department graduating.

As we all know, we never would have expected our final semester to be switched to remote instruction. Nonetheless, we all persevered through the challenges and made it our goal to finish the semester strong. We all know that despite these circumstances, we still deserve to be acknowledged by our University, more specifically the Kinesiology department. Many departments are recognizing their graduating classes of 2020 through a virtual commencement or a postponed ceremony when it is safe to do so. We, the undersigned, are deeply saddened by the lack of response that our department has taken towards acknowledging the graduating class.

We the undersigned request that the Department of Kinesiology find an alternative to the now cancelled in-person commencement celebrations. We also request that we still have the opportunity to purchase a Kinesiology stole. This is especially crucial for many of the students who are first-generation college students, commuting hours a day, working part-time to full-time jobs, being full time or part-time students, spending hours in the library, and tutoring all to be able to cross that stage with our diplomas.

We are demanding that we have the opportunity to celebrate our achievements alongside our peers, friends, and family, even if it is virtual in nature.

Updates

May 21, 2020

I have been in contact with several members of the department to formally present the concerns outlined here. While progress remains slow, it is important that we continue to keep the professional achievements of our class at the forefront of their focus.

The momentum generated by this collective effort confirms that our request for formal recognition is both reasonable and necessary. I am encouraged by the commitment shown by my peers to ensure our academic achievements are properly celebrated by the department.

I am a first generation student in which I was waiting anxiously for the commencement ceremony because having been through a lot within the years of earning my Bachelors degree, to having to get through all the sacrifice and no ceremony really affected me and of course my family where seeing their daughter graduate at a Cal State University would mean the world to them. Parents immigrated to give my sister and I a better life and they deserve to see a celebratios.

Seriously we worked way too hard for this. Just give us a stole or something to show for it.

I would prefer a postponed commencement, where I can actually walk across a stage

All students should be celebrated for their hard work. Especially during a crisis.

We also deserve a kinesiology stole that says 2020. The communication from KSA is horrible

Yes! The kinesiology department meant a lot to my experience at SFSU and would love to have a Kin sash as a memory!
