Recently the Cumberland County Board of Education made the unilateral decision to change the calendar at WT Brown Elementary School to a traditional calendar from a Year around calendar without properly notifying the parent population at the school. The parents expressed opposition to this change and requested an explanation as to why the change was needed. To date no such explanation has been provided. Parents have also asked what alternate options were considered as a part of the redistricting plan in effect however there has been no response to the parents from the Board of Education. We, the undersigned, want the Cumberland County Board of Education to: Consider the position of the parents of the over 400 students currently enrolled at WT Brown Elementary School BY CHOICE and revert the calendar back to year-round. We are also asking that in the future they considered and properly communicated with parents when changes of this nature are made regarding our students and that our concerns be addressed and questions adequately answered by the individuals making changes. We are petitioning to have the Board held accountable to the parents of the children the schools serve and to have members of the board create a policy that requires them to effectively communicate with parents prior to, throughout and upon implementation of any and all changes affecting students in a more effective manner.
