Dear fellow participant in the sport of purebred dogs.
The proposed judging policy changes under consideration by
the AKC board of directors includes some changes that many believe will be
extremely detrimental to our sport.
Please consider the below petition to be sent to the AKC by 11/21/14.
I oppose the proposed AKC judging approval process:
The proposal is detrimental to the improvement of our purebred dogs and our conformation sport as it provides no ability for an employee of the governing body of our sport to evaluate and critique a judge’s in ring evaluation of exhibits. While evaluation of purebred dogs against a standard is subjective, there is a level of those that can complete this charge competently and a level that cannot. It is the AKC’s responsibility to ensure its judges meet this level of competency. The proposed policy as written is an abandonment of the responsibility of the AKC to the sport, its breeders and its exhibitors.

I strongly oppose the proposed AKC judging approval process. Approving more judges will not guarantee adding knowledgeable judges. Consistent ability must be evaluated by individuals who also possess the ability and experience to do so. To preserve our sport AKC has a duty to provide a staff who are professional, knowledgeable, as well as passionately aware of their responsibilities.
I think written critiques of each dog would improve AKC conformation judging tremendously. Plus, it gives the handler/breeder good feedback on how well their breeding program compares to the standard.
This proposal is all about quantity, not quality of judging. Assuming that "more" judges will solve the clubs' economic problems is short-sighted.
i also believe to help the sport maintain a sense of credibility. Judges should be held accountable for their decesion and give either a quick verbal or written reason as to why they have made the choices they have. It will be clearer to exhibitors at that point whether or not said judge has a different perspective or simply no understanding of the breed being judged.
The AKC system has always been known for turning out quality judges, and, having lived with a more liberal system, and seen the lack of quality produced by your neighbors to the north, I implore you to leave your system as it is.
THIS NEEDS TO BE COMPLETELY RE-THOUGHT.
in the hope that the ground swell of opposition to this proposal will cause the board to rethink their stand on this

Who thinks that taking accountability away from judges is a good idea? Accountability in life is one of the most important aspects of being human. If the authors of this proposal felt that in general judges are doing a good job, why would they care about being critiqued? Under the proposed judging policy changes the only people at the show responsible for their actions are the handlers.
