Open the Curley Community Center Beach
The Curley Community Center in South Boston has been closed for renovations since 2019. On June 5th the Curley Community Center opened for tours beginning June 9th and to members for self-workouts on June 15th, with limited programming classes on June 20th.
However the beach access is closed until fall which makes no sense because summer will be over. The City of Boston put out this statement "Due to nesting of the endangered Piping Plover birds, there will be no beach access from the center until fall. BCYF is working with the State to secure beach access for the future. Members are welcome to use the nearby beaches surrounding the center for this summer".
So the City of Boston had 5 years to get this done. This is a beach that should be enjoyed by members, children and families.
The City of Boston needs to submit a Beach Operation and Management Plan to the Boston Conservation Commission for approval but has not and has had plenty of time to do. There is a filing date coming up on June. 21st, with a hearing date of July 5th. This would allow the beach behind the Curley Community Center to potentially open this summer.
