Individual lessons are the most beneficial class the VCA Jazz and Improvisation course offers. 5 hours spanning one semester is not an adequate amount of time to work on an instrument with an experienced musician.

Healthy technique is one of the most important skills we can learn as musicians and this is a skill we learn primarily in individual lessons, without adequate time and attention the risk of injury due to poor technique escalates. This is but one of the many detriments caused by such a severe reduction in individuals lessons.

This petition is from all of those who oppose the change to the number of individual lessons afforded to each first year student at the VCA.

I have been reading your stories about the physical toll of these cuts and it confirms my fear that we are risking our long term health for the sake of a budget. I am currently compiling these experiences to present to the faculty because they need to understand that this is about more than just convenience.

Seeing the momentum behind this push proves how many of us are worried about our physical health and our development as musicians. It is validating to know I am not the only one fighting for the time we need to practice safely.

I believe that a lack of guidance as a result of personal lesson cuts is the most significant contributor to my current vocal injury, which I'm now seeking medical advice about. So.. I've paid for lessons I didn't get, and, to add injury to insult, will be incurring additional medical expenses. Not a great start.

One on one lessons are possibly the most important part of this course. It is absolutely essential to us that we don't start to develop bad technique with the lack of guidance - this had already resulted in injury and could affect more students. This is an extremely low stoop for any funding cuts.

Please don't let the standards slip for this nationally renowned jazz course! I came to Melbourne from England almost solely to study under some of the most prestigious leaders in the scene and my one on one tuition time has been invaluable. Considering that most of our teachers are extremely busy and often don't take on many students outside of uni, this part of the course needs the UoM's full support. We need more individual lessons, please support our learning and maintain the standards that the VCA has been leading for decades.

Surely there's something wrong when even the teachers themselves are up in arms about only 5 one-on-one lessons. That's got to change!

I have had both weekly and bi-weekly lessons and both have their ups and downs. But if this change was to happen, I'd still be paying the same tuition. Another way to keep stealing from the bottom.

Individual lessons have made me a way better players than I used to be. 5 individual lessons are definitely not enough for students to earn adequate progress on their playing
