Individual lessons are the most beneficial class the VCA Jazz and Improvisation course offers.
5 hours spanning one semester is not an adequate amount of time to work on an instrument with an experienced musician.
Healthy technique is one of the most important skills we can learn as musicians and this is a skill we learn primarily in individual lessons, without adequate time and attention the risk of injury due to poor technique escalates. This is but one of the many detriments caused by such a severe reduction in individuals lessons.
This petition is from all of those who oppose the change to the number of individual lessons afforded to each first year student at the VCA.
I believe that a lack of guidance as a result of personal lesson cuts is the most significant contributor to my current vocal injury, which I'm now seeking medical advice about. So.. I've paid for lessons I didn't get, and, to add injury to insult, will be incurring additional medical expenses. Not a great start.
