New policies in the UCLA music administration have reduced building access hours and severely limited student use of large ensemble spaces.
A large portion of the student body feels that the changes to facility policy are a direct threat to our ability to be productive, creative, and to meet our individual goals and academic requirements. After talking with many of my colleagues, there are great concerns regarding limited ensemble rehearsal space availability, individual practice space availability & flexibility, and capable recording spaces, as well as strains on instrument access & preparation, extracurricular & club activity, and individual lesson preparation.
As a school-wide student body, we are currently drafting a letter to the HASOM Operations team, the Dean of the Herb Alpert School of Music, and the Chair of the Music Department that clearly states our needs as students of the Herb Alpert School of Music, and how these new policies are restrictive of our ability to grow and thrive as a music institution.

Playing in the practice rooms to create with fellow musicians is a hallmark of my UCLA experience. It’s where my favorite memories have been made, and where some of my favorite pieces have been written, in the off-rehearsal hours!
As a member of the faculty, I am deeply against cutting practice room hours. These hours are critical to our students' development and success. I urge you to reconsider so that students have every avenue available to continue making HASOM a success story.
Music students need easy and broad access to practice and rehearsals spaces to allow for healthy and productive growth. If they have to cram practice and rehearsal sessions into tight windows they are forced to sacrifice other necessities like meals and sleep, this is a completely avoidable problem.
For years I have boasted about the opportunity at UCLA. I tell prospective students that UCLA isn’t a big music school, but you will always find performance opportunities and make your own path. The limiting of building hours and room space will limit the creativity and opportunity of the student body.
Access to practice rooms and ensemble rooms is crucial for Chamber studies, productive preparation for lessons, and development of students as a whole. Available space is already extremely limited as is. Building access hours should be increased if anything.
As a former member of CBSO, now UCLA alum, I find this policy quite frustrating. You are delegitimizing the craft that these organizations put into the very thing you stand for, because at the end of the day, music is meant to be shared. By continuing to implement these policies, you are ensuring that the ability to create is limited to those who pay for them. The elitist stereotype that comes with music and its creation only starts to be more and more true if these policies go through. The beauty of CBSO is through the mutual understanding that, unlike most of the students in HASOM, our career paths will most likely not end in music. However, by just joining together once a week, culminating in that performance, at least for a few hours, and the limited amount of time we have with each other, we can meet even just once to create and move towards creating and perfecting our craft. This is creating art, despite having other commitments, all the assignments, the inevitability of leaving it behind, we create community through music. Is this not what HASOM stands for? A few lines from your mission statements and values: We envision a school of music that welcomes students from all backgrounds.. This does not seem all too welcoming, removing disadvantaged students from being able to utilize the facilities to play music. Out of 31,600 undergraduate students, INCLUDING your own HASOM undergraduates, accounting for all the rooms used at once, LESS THAN 20 students can use all these practice rooms at a single time. Most of these practice rooms cannot even accommodate a string quartet, the most popular form of group music along with a band. Through our voices, we express our thoughts, passions, and stories in the most immediate way. Over the years, I have learned that reduced access to anything, whether music, healthcare, or policy, suppresses voices. The needs of students are overlooked. This is part of the school and funded by tuition. It’s is not right to charge extra for what should be available to the student and paid for by students tuition. If you charge music students for rehearsal time in the music school classes and studios then you need the charge the athletes for faculties used for practice.
