I am in full support of backyard chickens. The positive aspects are many. One not mentioned often enough is that chickens eat a lot of mosquitoes! After reviewing Knoxville's specific, practical code restrictions concerning backyard chickens, I think the approach they have had in place for 5 years, if also adopted in Oak Ridge, would be adequate to protect the interests of neighbors and neighborhoods.

I am an Oak Ridge citizen and property owner. If you can feed birds in your back yard, why not a handful of chickens?

I most likely will not be raising hens although I would like the option to do so in the future. I think everyone should have the option open to them with some stipulations. If the neighbors complain about noise or smell, then they should either have a mediator or similar to decide if they can keep them. Pretty much along the same lines as goes for any other pet.

I live at 87 Outer Drive in Oak Ridge. I think it is important to allow people to raise up to six hens on their property within the Oak Ridge city limits. Please review Knoxville's regulations regarding backyard hens as a model. Thanks.

As Knoxville allows chickens, Oak Ridge should, too. They would encourage students involved with 4H, as well as allow families/individuals to raise their own chickens for pleasure, education, and eggs.

They serve many purposes! Not just the fresh eggs but offer a little of farm living to the city children. All things don't grow on grocery store shelves!
