The benefits of backyard chickens include a providing a healthy, sustainable source of fresh eggs, nitrogen-rich fertilizer, and non-pesticide bug control in your backyard. It also provides opportunities for families to teach their children about sustainability, healthy food sources, and the care and keeping of pets.
By signing this petition, you agree that the residents of Carriage Run Neighborhood in Wake Forest, NC, should be allowed to have the option to own and care for backyard chickens.
This is in agreement and abiding by the Town of Wake Forest's ordinance 2008-35, article IV, section 6.51A.
Please note that those neighbors that choose to raise backyard chickens will still need to abide by the Town's ordinances of no more than 10 hens (no roosters), and they will need to be contained on the designated property.The chickens cannot wander onto others' properties.
By signing this petition, you are also voting for all backyard chicken owners to have a proper coop to house their chickens. This coop does not need to follow the architectural guidelines that are currently posted in the covenants. (this means you can choose the type, size and color coop for you!)

I have been spending my evenings talking to neighbors who want to teach their kids about food sources and responsible pet care. Managing a small coop is a simple way to bring more self-sufficiency to our yards. My own family is ready to start building as soon as we clear this hurdle.

Seeing this level of enthusiasm from our neighbors feels incredible because I know how much my own family would benefit from raising our own hens. The momentum behind this change proves that many of us are ready to bring sustainable living into our backyards.
