Protection is not just PPE
All students at the college are attending classes when it was specifically stated by the MEC of Higher Education stated that only final year students who need to do practicals should be attending.
We complete an online screening tool daily but no action is taken after completion of this tool
We will be expected to work until December, expected to place our lives in danger daily, whereas lecturers will be safe at home because they even refuse to accompany us to clinical areas
When asked about compensation for COVID19 related deaths the response is - Covid-19 is not regarded as an occupational hazard but as a national pandemic, therefore the college or the clinical facilities cannot be held responsible for any death that occurs. Basically we are not protected in any way
COVID19 is an extra-ordinary situation that the whole world is dealing with - but we are expected to continue with things in an ordinary way.
Students are expected to write tests while attending clinicals, despite being taught at 1hr intervals
Some students have received ONLY a surgical mask as PPE in the ward
I truly stand against the victimisation of students. We as students sacrifice our lives to work in clinical facilities without being given the proper PPE, it's really not fair. We wouldn't mind being there for the patients only if we were provided with PPE. The college has made it clear that if we are to contract covid-19 we are on our own, we don't have medical we are just an asset im the nursing practice.
