We, the undersigned CNA represented Nurses of UCSF Medical Center, demand the needs of our Nurses be met in the face of this COVID-19 pandemic to protect ourselves, our patients, and our community! We urge UCSF to uphold the highest standards possible as we all work together to prevent the transmission of this virus and support those affected, within our facilities and the greater community.

If Nurses aren’t safe, then patients aren’t safe!

UCSF Nurses Demand the Following:

  • UCSF will provide nurses with, minimally, N95 masks (or higher respirator), along with face shield and contact precautions, for all suspected and confirmed COVID-19 patients, complying with the Cal/OSHA standards for aerosol precautions
  • UCSF RNs will be promptly notified of potential or actual COVID-19 exposure
  • UCSF RNs will have prompt access to testing if potentially or actually exposed to COVID-19
  • For work related COVID-19 exposures, UCSF will provide “Precautionary Leave,” complying with Cal/OSHA standards; if precautionary removal is recommended, the employee is to retain all benefits during that period, including pay
  • Our CNA contract will be maintained and upheld in all regards, but specifically, Article 23 in relation to the prioritization of career and per diem Nurses, in that order, for available shifts
  • UCSF will provide frontline healthcare workers with the highest standards of workplace safety and PPE as they move to reopen services and procedures

Reaching this level of visibility feels heavy when the exhaustion in the unit is already so constant. I am tired of fighting for the basic protections we deserve but seeing all of you stand with us keeps me going.

We need transparency on exposures. Finding out from a coworker rather than from management is unacceptable.

STOP REUSING MASKS. It is insane that we are being told to keep paper masks for days when the virus is everywhere. Protect the staff or nobody is going to be left to work!

My wife is an RN and she is terrified to come home after her shifts. Just give them the masks they need without making them jump through hoops.

All UCSF Healthcare professionals should absolutely have proper PPE available at all times. We also need to have proper notifications of potential or positive COVID exposures. It should be easily accessible for any healthcare professional to be tested for COVID if we are worried about exposure.

Please keep nurses safe so they can keep patients safe and their own families safe.

We need a better PPE specially for Dialysis RNS who stays inside a COVID pt x3hrs. How can we keep 6 feet away distance from an awake pt who talks a cough if ICU space is not that big. ? We are not ALLOWED TO USE CAPR as this is only for special procedure. Can we put them management inside the covid room so they can we dont need a better PPE?
