On June 25, 2014 a mother was approached by a female employee at the YMCA that said “Ma’am we were told that you’re breastfeeding here and I just wanted to let you know that it isn’t permitted”. So her, her husband, and 5 children left the YMCA. The mother was humiliated, and embarrassed by the staff. She of course has the legal right to breastfeed in the pool area or in any public or private location where the mother is authorized to be.

Nevada law, NRS 201.232 was added to Nevada Revised Statutes in 1995 (126) which states “Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a mother may breast feed her child in any public or private location where the mother is otherwise authorized to be, irrespective of whether the nipple of the mother’s breast is uncovered during or incidental to the breastfeeding.”

Any private establishment that invites patronage, like the YMCA, is included under this law. It is our greatest hope that this mistake can be rectified by the YMCA, by the following:

1. The YMCA must change the policy;
2. educate all current and future employees on the legality of this issue;
3. post signs which reassure and encourage breastfeeding mothers so that they know the YMCA supports breastfeeding within their establishment;

We need you to help make a positive change and normalize breastfeeding!
