Petition against Franchise and Formula businesses in the Historic Districts of the Town of Orangetown:
Final supporters
Small towns across America, in an effort to protect the uniqueness and historic charm of their communities, are fighting against over-development and Franchise/Formula businesses. They are adopting and making amendments to their existing codes to restrict Franchise and Formula businesses, which are any and all business types that share common features, such as; a standardized merchandise, trademark, architecture, decor, branding and/or signage, with at least 11 other establishments local, regional or worldwide.
Town of Orangetown’s motto is: Rich in History. In our efforts to protect and preserve the Historic Districts of the Town of Orangetown, we the undersigned are against Franchise and Formula businesses in the Historic Districts and request that the Town Board make an immediate resolution to amend the Zoning Code to add Franchise and Formula business to the list of businesses to be excluded (not permitted) in the Tappan and Palisades Historic Areas.
We continue to recognize that individualized and mom & pop businesses retain the charm and quaintness of our historic villages while strengthening the economy of local business owners.

Some things are worth more than short term commercial development. Snedens and Palisades east of PIP are historic jewels. They should be preserved as much as possible .
The Historic District Law was written, in significant part, to prevent the type of ahistorical cookie cutter development associated with such businesses, and this core purpose should be strengthened, not weakend.
Yes! Keep out franchises. But we denizens of small towns have to support independent businesses in order to keep them in business. That cool little shop will be gone if you never shop there.
Our homes and community serves as a refuge against the forces of Big Capitalism. They are among the last remnants of authentic, uncommodified living and need to be protected to preserve our sense of authentic self. We do not want franchises or formula businesses within our hamlet. There are plenty of other places to for them go where they may be wanted. Let them go there.
I live in historic district and it is important that we keep things the way they were, because it is more beautiful and more durable materials were used . 224 Rt 9W Palisades NY
I've seen the destruction that is committed in the name of progress. The world is not better off with more strip malls & box stores. We all lose in that scenario.

It is vitally important to protect & preserve our historical areas. Our country is rapidly being overcome by strip malls & housing developments. We should prevent that degradation at all costs.
