PETITION TO THE TOWN BOARD AND ZONING BOARD
REGARDING THE PROPOSED McDONALD’S DRIVE-THROUGH AT 260 East Pulaski Road

To the Members of the Huntington Town Board and Zoning Board:

We, the undersigned residents, neighbors, and community members, respectfully oppose any application, zoning relief, variance, special exception, or code change that would permit any kind of drive-through fast food establishment, including a proposed McDonald’s, whether with or without seating, at or near 260 East Pulaski Road in the community of Huntington Station.

Zoning laws exist for a reason: to preserve neighborhood character, protect public safety, manage traffic impacts, and ensure that development is appropriate for the surrounding community. The existing prohibition against drive-through food establishments in this area reflects those important planning principles and should not be weakened or changed for a single project.

This location is situated within a heavily traveled corridor that already experiences significant traffic congestion, particularly along the north-south thoroughfare connecting different parts of Huntington. There are numerous medical facilities along this road including a Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center across the street from the proposed site. Ambulances and First Responder vehicles require clear access to Northwell's Huntington Hospital on north Park Avenue. Residents and drivers are well aware that the intersection near 260 East Pulaski Road is already accident-prone and difficult to navigate safely. Adding a high-volume drive-through operation would intensify vehicle turning movements, backups, pedestrian conflicts, and overall roadway hazards.

Importantly, the proposed site is directly across from a passive park and one of the very few remaining open space areas in Huntington Station. Rather than preserving and complementing this community asset, a drive-through fast food establishment would introduce increased traffic, noise, idling vehicles, lighting, and congestion immediately adjacent to an area intended for recreation, open space, and neighborhood quality of life.

A drive-through fast food establishment at this location would:

  • Increase traffic congestion in an already overburdened corridor, and potentially delay rapid access to Huntington Hospital for First Responder vehicles;
  • Create additional safety risks for motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, and nearby residents;
  • Undermine the neighborhood-oriented character of the surrounding area;
  • Conflict with the presence of nearby passive parkland and open space;
  • Set a troubling precedent by disregarding the intent and purpose of existing zoning protections;
  • Introduce constant vehicle idling, noise, litter, and late-night activity incompatible with the surrounding community.

We respectfully urge the Town Board and Zoning Board to uphold the intent of the zoning code and deny any application or zoning change that would permit a drive-through fast food use at this location.

Our community deserves thoughtful development that prioritizes safety, neighborhood character, preservation of open space, and responsible planning — not increased congestion and dangerous traffic conditions at an already problematic intersection.

Respectfully submitted,

I experienced alot of traffic yesterday on Park Avenue. I am concerned about emergency vehicles being able to get to Huntington Hospital w/o gridlock. It appears that putting fast food establishment in the location will add to the congestion. Looking out for well-being of all!

A drive-thru MacDonalds is not in keeping with the character of this neighborhood, in fact would be a blight on it, and it offers no value to the community.

This McDonald’s will cause dangerous traffic though my neighborhood. We have many young children and toddlers and cars already use our neighborhood as a shortcut.

There will be too much traffic and there are a lot of doctors’ offices within walking distance and patients need to have access. It’s already a very busy intersection. The McDonald’s is a hard no for me. That location is perfect for a medical facility not another fast food joint feeding us nothing but processed garbage.

This will not add to our community well being and safety. This is a deterrent to our lifestyle and not why we moved here and will decrease our property values.

Park Ave and Pulaski Road are already an extremely congested intersection, with a railroad crossing close by. It would be unsafe for our community and first responders if a McDonalds was built at this intersection. There would be no safe way to enter or exit a McDonalds drive thru or parking lot at that intersection.

Our intersection is already a critical corridor - emergency vehicles, local small businesses, and the community’s character all depend on its balance. A fast-food chain here would not only overwhelm traffic but would erode the unique, thoughtful businesses that make this area ours. Let’s keep this intersection a safe, community-focused space - not just another drive-thru.

There is enough conjestion without adding more and the community doesn't want it. That should be enough!!!
