Whereas, we do not believe that the Denison Community Schools should begin earlier then the last week in August so it will not conflict with one of the largest end of the summer events in Iowa, the Iowa State Fair.
Whereas, historically, the Fair always ended on the Sunday one week before Labor Day but in 1994, the Iowa State Fair Board, in an effort to avoid earlier school start dates, moved the dates of the Fair up one week.
Whereas, the Fair now ends on the Sunday two weeks prior to Labor Day giving plenty of other time for Iowa schools to start.
Whereas, the Fair has already been moved once, but school administrators are now making the beginning of the school year even earlier.
Therefore, we, the undersigned, are against the Denison Community School District beginning their school year any earlier then the last full week in August so as to continue not to overlap with the Iowa State Fair.
The state fair is a tradition for so many families here. Kids should get to enjoy their full summer break without having to miss out because of school district scheduling.
