We the taxpayers of White County & parents of students in the White County, Georgia school system wish to address our total displeasure with the August 3rd starting date and desire to bring these concerns to the members of the White County Board of Education.
This date is too early, affecting students working summer jobs, interferes with family vacations, brings students back to school during the worst peak of summer heat and deprives families of needed bonding time.
Many school systems have delayed the start in Georgia and there is no reason White County cannot. Schools in the majority of the country start the day after Labor Day and end the first Friday in June while still having 180 days of instruction. These systems do not have as many "teacher professional days" or Christmas breaks days. These excessive breaks cause hardships to parents having to stay out of work or finding someone to be with their children.
Therefore, we the undersigned individuals request considering a delayed date for the start of school.

I really thought this might just be a small vent session between friends but seeing so many people jumping on board has me honestly floored. It feels like we are finally acknowledging how ridiculous the heat is at that time of year because it really is just too much to ask of kids and working parents alike.

We need to start later in August . My kids will miss the first day of school if it starts on the 3 which is a FRIDAY.... We will be on a cruise and I can't change the date ...
Summer vacation is getting shorter every year. Families don't have much time for vacations. Riding the un-airconditioned bus in the afternoons in August is unhealthy and my child is flushed and not feeling well. I would rather have some "no school" days removed from the school year than adding more and starting back early. There is only so much you can do with extra days off in February and October. The kids are just more likely to stay indoors on their phones, where as more time off in the summer gives the kids more time outdoors
An August 3rd start date is just too early to start back to school. The children need a full summer vacation. Some may have to spend time with two parents at two different times. The early start date ruins any opportunity for a late family summer vacation for the children, and school personnel as well.
I always thought this was silly since many students have summer jobs and need this extra time. It's too hot in August to rush back in there!
Starting early in August is costing us more money in A/C and fuel bills. We started in late August and were able to accomplish all necessary work
Kids need to be kids and spend time with family. Life is way to short to rush it.

As a concerned citizen and grandmother of a child who will likely attend white county schools in the future, I concur with the position put forth by this petition. Starting in the worst heat of the summer is a hardship for students in after school sports. It surely increases the cost of keeping the school buildings cool immensely versus a start date late in the month or after Labor Day. It keeps older students from being able to work summer jobs that are essential to many and decreases family summer time greatly. Please revisit this decision. It does not serve the students or teachers or parents well.
