We, the undersigned concerned parents of children in U-46, respectfully request that school not be in session on election days so long as U-46 schools are polling locations. Our children's welfare is at stake with increased traffic and with strangers having direct access to our children while in the school for election polling. This compromises not only the safety of our children but their education as principals and administrators are focused on the public entering the buildings as opposed to the curriculum. Please cease to have classes on election days and instead schedule an institution day or professional development day for teachers and staff.
Respectfully,

I have been hearing from so many of you who share my deep worry about having strangers walk our hallways while our kids are in class. I am currently reaching out to individual school board members to demand they prioritize our children over the convenience of a polling site.

January 13, 2015

Seeing this groundswell of support reminds me that I am not the only parent losing sleep over the safety of our kids. Your momentum proves that we all agree on one thing. Protecting our children in the classroom must come before using our schools as public polling sites.

Voting should not be taking place in Elementary Schools at any time; there are many other government buildings that can be used for that purpose. Our children need as much productive school days as it is available as well proper security while they are under school care.

I think election days are a distraction to kids and there is already too much traffic coming and going. We don't need to add to more chaos.

I agree I don't like the.increase in traffic in the school . It doesn't seem appropriate to say we will keep random people out of the building except on these specific days . So now someobe can actually plot to commit a crime . And that sounds very scary to me in this day and age

There is simply no way to keep our building secure inside or out on election day. The efforts made thus far have been worthwhile but they are not enough. If we have professional development on that day it will not result in any lost school time and the safety issue is solved.

In my opinion, principals and administrators do provide safety and security to the best of their ability to all students and staff when our schools are used as polling locations on election day and everyday of the school year. However, I do believe that in order to provide the best security and safety to our students, it is in their best interest to hold an institute/professional development/district collaborative day instead on election day, thereby minimizing threats to danger on behalf of our students welfare. Respectfully, I sign this petition to cease holding a school day for students on election day.

I understand that U-46 has no control over whether or not schools are used as polling places. Therefore, I support any effort on the District's part to make election days non-attendance days.
