All of our D101 schools are used as polling places. The district is in a long term contract with the Board of Elections, and our schools do not have the option of not serving as polling places. That said, other districts in our same situation, for example, La Grange D102, have an institute day, or day of non-student attendance, on the days when voting takes place to ensure student safety.

This petition proposes to the D101 School Board that our schools have an institute day when our D101 buildings are used as polling places.

Unfortunately, we now live in a time where violence in schools is becoming more commonplace. Even in our own area, we have recently had some stranger danger issues at and around schools. Let's have our children out of the voters and any potential harms way.

The school board is deciding on the 2017-18 calendar soon. By signing this petition, you are requesting in the future our children have a day of non-attendance, or a teacher institute day when our schools are used as polling places. This ensures safety for our children.

Thank You for your support!

Updates

November 8, 2016

I have requested a formal slot on the agenda for the upcoming school board meeting to present our policy proposal. We are currently drafting a letter for the district administration that details how other local districts successfully manage these non-student attendance days.

November 8, 2016

The volume of support has reached a level that necessitates a formal presentation to the district board. I am currently organizing these signatures into a report to submit alongside a written request for a calendar review session.

I can't believe our children are in school when they are completely open to the public. Please move around an institute day so they don't have to be there.

I kept my child home from school today out of concern for security at her school during voting.

We now live in a society where having kids in schools during voting is actually dangerous.

Our students do not need to risk safety by attending school on polling days. Please follow the example set by other area schools.

The world is way too crazy right now to have strangers walking through the hallways while kids are trying to learn. Just make it a staff day off.

I am in full support of having a day of non attendance for students. We have spent so much time and money to make our schools secure, it doesn't seem to make sense that one day out of the year we have an open door policy with students in the building. Unfortunately, random acts of violence are our reality and acting proactively is in the best interest of all our d101 students.

Why does the polling have to be held at schools at all?
