Easy access to food is a right.
In Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, residents only have access to two grocery stores within a 3 km radius: Provigo and Marche Richelieu, the latter closed on Saturday, the 14th of January. Provigo is said to be closing in the foreseeable future. People without cars are forced to find extrapolated ways and time to access food.
For students, the alternatives offered are not viable over the long term. McGill’s residence has found a way to provide one shuttle for students. However, it is not enough for all students living on campus in terms of capacity and timing. On top, public transport on the West Island is limited, especially in the evenings and on weekends. Thus, grocery shopping is a time-intensive endeavour for on-campus and off-campus university and cégep students.
For McGill and JAC students, as well as for residents of Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, the absence of grocery stores nearby reinforces our dependence on cars to seek food commodities which contributes to increase greenhouse gas emissions and daily traffic.
Sign this petition to raise awareness about this issue and manifest your discontent! We hope to achieve a positive change for our community by presenting enough signatures to the mayor of Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue and McGill’s Mac Campus Dean.

The momentum behind this petition proves that the residents of Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue are done being ignored. It is time for the local officials and the Dean to stop stalling and start providing real solutions for our community.

Getting groceries is now harder. And McGill makes it a habit to leave out the students in the MacDonald campus. It would benefit every student. As a possible solution. McGill should open up a groceries store in Sainte Anne. Locals from Sainte Anne, students of John Abbott and MacDonald McGill would benefit from it. And McGill would get good PR for providing residents of Sainte Anne a place to shop for groceries.
Initially I didn’t think the closing of the Marche Richelieu would affect me but I noticed my stress levels have increased in the past few days trying to figure out how I am going to provision for food on days I am busy with assignments. Although online ordering is available, it is not a feasible option for a student when delivery costs are $5-9 each delivery. I also am not able to participate in the bus provided by McGill as I have time conflicts with my courses. This has added unnecessary stress into my life. It is absolutely ridiculous that students living near and attended a prestigious university have to live in a good desert! This was definitely not what I expected when I decided to pursue my Masters at McGill.
i am a student in ste anne who has late classes monday, the one day the bus runs. there is now no way for me to get food within walking distance.
For a campus that talks so much about food security, isn't it ironic if the community in which it is situated is food insecure?
Although I'm not a resident of St-Anne, I find this situation unacceptable for the local residents (especially people who don't own cars, elderly, students, etc.). Being able to shop locally via walking is very important considering climate change impacts and people shouldn't be losing this option, but instead be gaining more local options...

As a resident of Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, I think having regular access to food so that I can remain nourished and alive, is a fairly reasonable request. It’s a necessity for the 5000+ people who live here
