We, the undersigned YMCA members, request full access to the swimming pool whenever Hilltop YMCA is open.

It is not acceptable to us that the new pool schedule reduces the hours the pool is open by nearly 25%.

We believe the new pool schedule will negatively impact members and staff by:

  • inconveniencing many club members, especially those who can only swim during the middle of the day, evenings, or on weekend afternoons (due to work, parenting, childcare schedules, etc.)
  • increasing the likelihood of pool overcrowding, since there will be fewer open hours
  • negatively impacting the financial well-being and morale of pool staff, whose excellent service we appreciate

In addition, we object to the lack of a transparent process for getting input from the Hilltop YMCA community about the potential impact of pool closures and alternative options for addressing any related budgetary issues.

Updates

The management still refuses to discuss the pool hours but they are definitely noticing the pressure from your signatures. Post this link on your Facebook page today and email your local branch director to demand a public meeting.

We hit a real turning point today and management is finally paying attention to our collective demand for full pool access. Post this link on your Facebook wall right now and send a quick email to the branch manager to keep the pressure on.

I joined the YMCA to learn to swim. Since then I use the pool several times a week. If I want to throw in an extra pool workout I do not want to have to look at a schedule to see when I can do that. The pool should be open when the Y is open. If you are looking to increase membership, cutting pool hours is NOT the way to do it.

Having had 2 hip replacements in the past 3 years, I find the pool to be very helpful (and the only thing) that relieves my pain. The pool is an integral part of my exercise regime. Please rethink your idea of changing the present pool hours.

I try to swim daily because I have pain issues. Because of the pool closures, I can no longer do so. I really feel it in my body when I can’t swim. This is the only reason that I come to the Y. If this continues, then I will have to look elsewhere for a place to swim.

I've been a member for 24 years and only use the pool. If the pool must close for a few hours daily at least alternate closures early/late every other day. Further, if wages are an issue, eliminate the table on the pool deck where 2-3 people sit and do nothing (I'm not referring to the lifeguards).

I hope more will be done to keep the water aerobics program vibrant. I'm against cutting pool hours. This seems like a poor decision in the interest of money . The way it was done did not even involve the community or those of us who are affected at the Richmond Y. I don't see how that reflects community and family values.

I joined the Y for the indoor pool and the hours that were offered. I understand that the pool costs money, but this is what I'm paying for with my membership dues. I know there are MANY members who only come to the Y for the pool. Isn't the Y concerned about losing these members? And, if not, what has happened to one of the Y's core values: Caring?

I joined Hilltop Y when it opened in 1993 because of the pool. Swimming laps has been essential to my health and well being. The severely reduced schedule prevents me from swimming in the evenings after work and greatly limits the pool's availability on the weekends. Making this schedule without consulting the users disrespects us all and ignores our needs as paying members. The pool schedule as posted is absurd and we demand a return to the previous schedule as it has been since this YMCA opened.
