As community members of Northern Illinois University, we call on the University to recognize the parking problem on campus during peak hours of the day. We urge the University policy makers to take quick action to relieve the parking congestion and generate a plan of action that will fix the problem permanently. We believe that we deserve fair parking policies and that the University has failed to deliver. Students and Professors are being made late to class. Parking fines are issued when violations occur due to lack of space. Parking passes and fines are expensive and the parking is not adequate to meet our needs. Stress and frustration are on the rise creating an unhealthy community and a hostile environment. During peak hours and with heavy snowfall, there are times when no parking is available. Local businesses reserve their lots for their customers and do not allow NIU parking. North East lot "A" has helped relieve some congestion but is not sufficient during peak parking hours or when we have had snow. Lot A is also far from central campus and not easily accessible. Because Northern Illinois is prone to severe weather conditions we call upon the University policy makers to increase accessibility to central campus. With the cooperation of students, faculty, and staff we are confident that a feasible resolution can be drafted. We urge swift action to help make a long awaited improvement in the NIU community, and we demand that our concerns be recognized.
