The Nicholson Project is working with artist Antoine Williams on a Public Art Building Communities grant from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. The project we are proposing will consist of four temporary murals, one in each quadrant of DC, to be installed in the summer of 2023. The Nicholson Project is requesting the public's support of this project through this online petition, that we will include with our grant application. Please sign in support and share with others!

More about the project:
"Mythic Beings" is a series of four Afrofuturistic murals created by artist Antoine Williams. These murals will be gateways to an imagined liberated Black future. The “Mythic Beings” are mythological deities the artist has imagined that embody radical ways of existing that highlight the beauty of Black life while subverting the status quo.

Each site-specific mural will range in scale and medium: two murals will be large and in color, covering the side of a building, and two murals will be intimate at street-level and around 8-10 feet in height. The large murals will be done with a vinyl building wrap or a large banner, and the smaller two will be done with a paper and gel medium process (similar to wheat paste) that the artist is known for.

All four murals will consist of a physical and digital component. The public will be able to engage with the murals using augmented reality, creating another layer of visual and auditory experience. Each mural, using AR, when scanned, will reveal one part of a four-part narrative. Audiences are encouraged to visit all four murals to get the full narrative.

I stand with Nicholson Project in supporting this grant request. I encourage stronger support of Ward 8 art programming to engage more with the local community and it's artist projects.

I hope that this project will be given strong support, as it promises to offer wonderful opportunities for members of the community to engage with iart, the immediate environment, and one another.

DC needs more art like this. Antoine is doing great things and I really hope he gets the funding to make these murals happen across the city.
