Garden City High School students who live east of Rockaway Avenue but less than 1.5 miles from GCHS should get a bus to school, mileage should not be the only factor. The population of children in this area has grown significantly and it is time to revisit adding a bus route to accommodate this particular neighborhood. Providing a bus for high schoolers in this geographic area can offer several significant benefits, considering traffic, dangerous crossing situations, and the time it takes to walk (30-40 minutes, depending on exact location).

The following factors should be major considerations above mileage alone:

Pedestrian Safety and Dangerous Crossing: If students need to cross busy roads or intersections on their way to school, this could expose them to significant dangers. A bus can bypass these risks by providing a safer mode of transportation.

Reduces Traffic Congestion: Providing a bus service can also have a positive impact on the overall traffic situation in the area. If more students use buses, there will be fewer individual cars on the road, reducing congestion.

Reduces Family Conflict: Many families have multiple children which they have to be home for to get them on and off their elementary school bus. With the extreme amount of traffic on Cathedral Ave, Rockaway Ave, Stewart Ave, Cherry Valley Ave and Merillon Ave, it's nearly impossible to travel back and forth in a timely manner.

Parental Dependence: Relying on both parents to transport a student can be logistically challenging. Parents might have work commitments, health issues, or other responsibilities that make it difficult for them to consistently provide transportation. A bus service can provide a reliable and consistent solution.

Promotes Independence: Having reliable transportation allows students to take responsibility for their own commute, promoting independence and self-reliance.

Promotes Attendance: Long and potentially risky walks to school may deter some students from attending regularly which can negatively impact a student's education. Providing a bus service can help ensure that students have a reliable means of transportation, which can lead to better attendance rates.

An added bus route in this central section of Garden City can contribute positively to the overall community. It demonstrates a commitment to the safety and well-being of students, which can improve the community's perception of the school and foster a sense of collective responsibility.
