Respectfully petition the Amityville Union Free school District Board of Education to maintain the current milage guideline for transportation eligibility. The transportation eligibility guidelines currently in place for the Amityville Union Free School District provide safe and accessible travel for students of all grade levels. This proposition seeks to maintain the existing mileage guidelines to ensure the continued safety, well-being, and accessibility for all students.
We propose that the Board of Education uphold the following transportation eligibility distances:
• Pre-K to Grade 2: 0.5 miles
• Grades 3 to 5: 1.0 mile
• Grades 6 to 12: 1.2 miles
1. Student Safety & Well-Being
• Ensuring reliable transportation minimizes risks associated with long walking distances, including traffic hazards and inclement weather conditions.
• Young children, especially in Pre-K through Grade 2, require shorter walking distances for their safety and comfort.
2. Consistency & Stability
• Maintaining the current guidelines provides families with predictable and stable transportation arrangements.
• Sudden changes to eligibility may cause confusion, stress, and disruptions to family routines.
3. Community Impact
• Transportation access is essential for equitable education, ensuring all students have the ability to arrive at school safely and on time.
• Reducing eligibility distances may disproportionately affect families without alternative means of transportation.

My kids walk enough as it is. Dont take the buses away from them in this weather its not safe
Safety has to be the first priority for the board. Please keep the busing how it is so we dont have to worry about the little ones walking these distances alone.
Every student should have bus transportation Just remember that you have jobs because of the students so don’t let the students down
I think it is only fair looking at the mileage in which the guidelines are set to today. It already pushes the boundaries of what you average student of that age bracket should be exposed to anything worse than this should be doing a disservice to the students and the community at large is this not what our homeowners taxes are paying for?
Busses are extremely important for students to get to school. Don’t change something that isn’t broken!
