The Friends of Music at Terryville High School is concerned that our town has just taken a huge step backward in eliminating a music position at Eli Terry Jr. Middle School. With only one teacher to teach both chorus and band at the middle school, the town-wide program will suffer. This will affect the high school program over the coming few years where we currently have an award-winning band and chorus that represents our town proudly in regional parades and festivals. Music has been proven to increase math scores, reading scores, science scores, SAT scores; help problem solving abilities; increase coordination. Findings show that student musicians have a more positive perception about themselves; and participation in music has been cited by college admission counselors to be very important. We, the undersigned, are concerned citizens of Plymouth, CT who urge our leaders to act now to reinstate the music teacher position that was recently eliminated for the 2014-2015 school year.

Updates

May 27, 2014

I spent the morning reviewing the budget documents and the impact on our middle school program is even worse than we calculated. Call the board of education office today and demand they reverse this decision. We need them to see that our community will not tolerate these cuts to our children's education.

The scale of this response proves that our town prioritizes arts education. Call your town council representatives today and tell them that we insist on reinstating the music position at Eli Terry.

An excellent program allowing my twin daughters the opportunity to excel in a music rich environment! Not only have they learned music in school they share their gifts and talents in church every Sunday in the vocal choir as well as the hand bell choir. My thanks to all the teachers at all levels!

Music has been a vey important part of my own life and the choral portion began with high school chorus. Just having observed both the Eli Terry Jr. Middle School and the Terryville High School bands at the Memorial Day parades in town it is abundantly clear how important maintaining a quality music program in our schools locally is.

My daughter is going into 6th grade. She has been in chorus and band she plays the flute. She purchase a flute from mr. Regimbald because she really loves playing. Now she may need to miss out on this and I am very upset. I love going and see her perform and stand in front of a crowd to show what music she has learned. As a parent that is a special moment.

My child is musically inclined and those talents have been recognized and supported in both chorus and band. The ETJMS music program has allowed her a place to perform with passion and pride.

Mrs. DeMichiel has been all three of my sons Chorus teacher throughout the past seven years. Music is also very therapeutic for everyone. I can attest for improvement in academic scores as my child was diagnosed with ADHD in 2008 and has been off of any medication since December 2012 and his grades have improved tremendously. Taking our programs from our future generations of children will negatively impact their opportunities available to them as the venture into adulthood. Think about their future and ours!!!

I just don't get it , we do all this work to have a terrific music program in town and then we just cut it off at its knees . Maybe we should eliminate some position in the board of Ed office or make them take a pay cut ... Why should we always take it out on the children ?

Both my daughters have been involved in both programs for years! I'm so proud of their achievements. The towns music teachers are extremely talented and play a huge part in our schools and deserve our respect for teaching our children such fantastic talents!
