On Monday April 9th 2018 the Laporte School Board voted to get rid of music altogether. There was no discussion about this beforehand with faculty, students or parents. There was no attempt to gather opinions from the community or to discuss other options.

I believe I am in the majority when I say there has been a grave miss calculation as to the importance of having a music program in the school.

Music has been statistically proven to promote and improve language, reasoning, memorization, coordination, emotional development, pattern recognition, auditory skills, imagination, intellectual curiosity, discipline, spatial intelligence, creative thinking and teamwork skills. Students who are involved in music also statistically score higher on their SAT.

In my opinion, removing music from the school does a tremendous disservice to the students and the other members of this community. If you agree that music should stay in the school please show your support in an attempt to reverse this decision by signing this petition

I have been hearing from so many of you who remember the exact concert or practice that changed your life in these halls. It is clear that we are grieving the loss of something vital for our kids. I am preparing to bring these testimonials directly to the next board meeting to show them exactly what they are stripping away.

Seeing this groundswell of support is deeply moving because I remember how much the band room meant to my own daughter when she struggled to find her place. This momentum proves that our community refuses to let our children lose their creative homes without a fight.

To rid the school of a music program is unacceptable. The arts have flourished in Laporte for many years, and it all starts in Elementary School with Mrs. Bass! Her devotion to the school’s arts programs has been unmatched. The absurdity of this decision is unfounded.

There are better ways to address budget concerns! Music is truly a specialty to teach. Not all teachers can sing, much less teach music. Research has shown over and over again the importance of music in education. Please don't follow through with this mistake!

Music is a big part in school. I am in choir and it makes my whole day better! It teaches kids a whole new way to express themselves and that’s so important! Please keep it!

We need music in high school and elementary to keep our kids eligible for college and to keep our district competetive. We cannot lose music. This will kill our school district in favor of the larger schools that offer the arts.

I have nothing against STEM push in school, but at the expense of shaping well rounded people by cutting out out music and the arts.....big mistake and disservice to our young.

Think this is ridiculous. Need budget cuts so kill the music program. I look forward to all the concerts the school has. Need cuts get rid of the chrome books and go back to books and pencil and paper. All this school is doing is making me decide to send my child somewhere else. Irritating KEEP MUSIC!!

The children at this school need music in their lives.

Don’t let music become irrelevant in the lives of these children. It is a critical part of their development as humans, and we need to preserve that.
