I’m taking action in order to push for school dress codes to be less discriminatory towards students, primarily girls, in Greenwich and other neighborhoods. In 2017, over 150 students at a single Connecticut high school were suspended all at once for breaking dress code policy. Additionally, a protest involving about 60 students occurred at Greenwich High School in 2013 opposing GHS’ dress code with the ideal that “GHS body shames.” Students at GHS have experienced dress code violations based upon their physical appearance, which is a form of discrimination.By creating this petitions as a motion for students, parents, and staff within the school district to be able to create their own dress code, with input from administration, then members of my community will be able to contribute to the creation of their own personalized dress code, one which is less discriminatory. This will hopefully satisfy the need for a revised school dress code policy.
