We are 5th and 6th grade students, and we want to open a dialogue with our school administration and community about our school's current discriminatory dress code.
Administration says the following clothing options are "distracting to students:"
- undergarments (no bra straps or undershirt straps showing at all)
- shirts, sweaters and jackets that cover shorts
- shirts that do not cover the midriff
We want to discuss alternate dress codes that are non-discriminatory towards ability, gender, or body type, and that also support all students' needs.

The current level of interest confirms the need for a formal meeting with the school board to present our proposed policy changes. I am preparing a briefing document that outlines our specific requests for the administration to review.

Starting in middle school through high school, many many girls (including myself) were harassed by our school over sexist dress code. So awesome you all are speaking up and brining change (looking back I wish I had).
I think that it is SO UNFAIR that if my bra strap is showing I will have to change. One of my favourite shirts has a spider-back, now I can NEVER wear it because of the the strap rule
I'm the mom to both a boy and a girl. And I'm telling you this is a boy problem, not a girl problem. Enough already.
Not showing bra straps really got to me. I have an MBA, and I can assure you that purposefully or not, a bra strap has creeped from my very clothing, and pretty much every other woman who wears one. I can't imagine how I would have felt being called out by a teacher or anyone else for this "infraction", but not good.
I wholeheartedly agree. A dress code may be required that is applicable to both genders and should address topics like Text/language printed on T-shirt’s. Anything that is specific to what a girl can/cannot wear should be removed.
Students should have the freedom to exercise their 1st amendment right of free speech/expression. School officials make up their own rules as they go, then interpret those rules in a way that is not in the students' best interest. We need schools that encourage self expression and allow children to grow and flourish.
All children, regardless of gender, are responsible for their behavior. Girls should not be made to feel responsible for the behavior of others, and we definitely should not be sexualizing them or making them self-conscious.

So shorts are allowed but if a sweater covers the shorts that’s not allowed? So please, cover yourself LESS. But shirts that show that your abdomen is covered in skin are not allowed. So cover yourself MORE. This is all nonsense.
