Seniors with income $25,000 or less may have their property taxes frozen at current rate. But those taxes would accumulate from the time it was frozen. If they sell the property, or pass away and someone inherits, the back taxes that were deferred must be paid before clear title is issued. Or, it would be sold out from under you. It is a lien. We are against the freeze and having to pay back taxes because the only tax relief is at current rate, not a lowering to previous rates, and because of having to pay it back. As it is, most of the E. Panhandle carries the rest of the state in tax base.
