Students across the country, including Rye Neck High School, are planning a National School Walkout Day at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 14, the one-month anniversary of the tragedy in Parkland, Florida. The walkout is planned to last for 17 minutes in recognition of the 17 lives lost that day. We believe the Rye Neck School District should respect the activism and interest demonstrated by Middle Schoolers and allow them to participate. Threatening to suspend students goes against the values we stand for.

I am honestly overwhelmed by how many people believe in our students and their right to be heard. We are getting so close to two hundred and fifty signatures because of the heart you have all poured into this effort. If you could send the link to a few more people today, I truly believe we can hit that mark and show the school board exactly how many of us are watching.

I really never imagined this many people would care about our students, and I am honestly stunned to see so many of you standing with us. This momentum is entirely yours because you saw something worth fighting for and decided to join in.

You can’t teach your students to “be the change you want to see in the world” and then not allow them to do it !!! Great job kids. Stand up for your rights!!

I stand behind my child to do this. My son knew one of the children killed in the Florida shooting and it has affected him. How dare any school not allow MS’s to have such rights as the HS’s.

This is an opportunity to have a teaching moment and educate our children on how to advocate for themselves! Just as the high schoolers have a choice whether or not to participate, the middle schoolers should have that choice as well.

We cannot teach kids to be responsible citizens if we prohibit them from taking active rolls and curbing their free speech rights. Supreme Court decided in 1969 that students retain their rights to free speech within school.

If we think middle students are mature enough to handle lock down drills to save their lives they are certainly mature enough to walk out for 17 minutes to make a statement and respect those children who have lost their lives.

This happened 30 minutes away from my SCHOOL, MY HOUSE, my life. This could have happened in my school, and am going to fight for the laws to change.
