The Cincinnati Birthing Community is saddened to hear that Mercy West no longer has midwives serving birthing patients due to Seven Hills dismissing their team of midwives.
Many birthing patients were drawn to deliver at Mercy West because of the midwifery care available and the embracing staff. Mercy West is known to provide compassionate, open-minded, evidence-based birthing options which are hard to find in Cincinnati. Midwives excel at providing low-intervention care and consistently improve birth outcomes and patient satisfaction.
We encourage Mercy West will fill the void left by the termination of the Seven Hills midwife team and find a way to continue offering a midwifery care option to patients birthing at Mercy West Hospital. The location and natural birthing suite at Mercy West have great appeal to the community and is widely regarded as a great place to birth, but midwives are an essential component. Without them many patients will go elsewhere. Mercy West, we implore you to fill the gap.
We need midwives. Those that choose to go go low to no intervention deserve the support and heart of the midwives. Taking away our choice to deliver in a hospital setting with a like-minded person will result in more home births so women feel supported in the way we want and deserve. OBs are amazing but it was the midwives that helped me have the guts to try for my VBAC. The OB told me I only had 38% chance and scheduled a C section. I rocked my VBAC, only pushing for 18 minutes. I would never have been able to say that without them.
