Hello and thank you for reviewing my petition. Today Aramark enforced a new policy for our students in North Providence school district.
This policy states that any child that owes 10$ or more for school lunches will not receive a normal lunch meal but instead will receive a cheese sandwich. Children with free lunches are not affected by this new policy but children with reduced and regular priced lunches are. Many parents do not qualify for there children to get free or reduced lunches and still may not be able to afford to pay for their meals. This change will affect many students due to no fault of their own but simply because their parents cannot afford it.
As we know 21.7 million students in the country receive free or reduced lunch and during the summer go hungry because school is out and for many this is the only meal they receive.
Our students, OUR CHILDREN should not have to worry about how their meals are being paid for, not to mention the humiliation of not having the money. Our children are in school 8 hours a day, many with just one snack break, if this is the only meal they look forward to is it fair to punish them this way?
should a cheese sandwich policy be the reason children feel humiliated in front of other peers? Should a cheese sandwich be the meal they receive everyday if they owe money and cannot afford it until the next week to pay?
Please join me and sign my petition which will go to the food service director for Aramark, Monique Herard. Monique Herard this is an outrage and we kindly request a better solution than this one!

I have been reading your stories about lunch debt and the shame our kids feel in the cafeteria. It breaks my heart to see how many families are struggling while our children are being singled out for things they cannot control. I am currently working to get a direct meeting with the school board to demand they end this policy for good.

Seeing this kind of movement confirms that so many of you feel the same ache I do when I think about a child being singled out in the lunch line. It is heartbreaking that we even have to demand basic dignity for our kids, but knowing I am not fighting alone gives me the strength to push this further.

This is ridiculous! A child has no choice but to attend school for 6 hours a day.!A meal should be provided for them no matter what!
This is a humiliation towards children. They should worry about bullying within schools and see that unfortunately it will increase if cheese sandwiches are what kids are being made to rat at no one's fault.

How dare the school department make a innocent child pay for the parent not being able to afford a food bill ... We are suppose to promote good behavior ! Not retaliation ! To me you are taking healthy food out of a child's mouth ,giving them unhealthy salty binding cheese sandwiches ... What if that's the only meal that child gets that day!!! You don't know what every family Is going threw ! Take the food and money from prisoners,criminals who eat an turn lights on for free!! Have heat every winter and enjoy going out side ! And give it to the children that deserve better then criminals !!!
It's a disgrace ! We can pay for prisoners food but not school meals ? Keep signing everyone ! Thank you all!

This is ludicrous your punishing the kids for their parents faults , the school system should rise above this and let the children have a nutritious meal at least once a day , because if a parent is 10.00 delinquent they obviously have a money deficit and we do want our future to better itself and if our children are not fed adequately they won't learn to their greatest potential and our world won't prosper .... It doesn't take a genius to realize this !!!!
