Make Valley Avenue Safer – Take Action Now
We, the undersigned, urge the City of Homewood to address ongoing safety hazards on Valley Avenue between Clermont Dr. and 18th Street South.
Residents along this stretch face dangerous conditions daily. Vehicles frequently speed, misuse the center turn lane as a passing lane, and lose control. Multiple crashes have occurred over the years—including cars leaving the roadway, striking parked vehicles, and even hitting residential buildings.
The current layout—where residents must back directly onto a busy road—combined with high speeds and reckless driving, creates a serious and ongoing risk to people, homes, and property.
We are asking the City of Homewood to take action:
Immediately:
- Increase police presence and traffic enforcement
- Address speeding and improper use of the center lane
Long-Term:
- Install traffic calming measures (speed bumps, raised tables, etc.)
- Add protective barriers (bollards, guardrails) to prevent vehicles from leaving the roadway
- Conduct a traffic safety study and review accident data from the past 10 years
This is a known and recurring safety issue. Action is needed now to prevent further damage, injury, or loss of life.
Protect our homes. Protect our families. Make Valley Avenue safer.

On April 26, 2025, a driver came barreling through Valley Ave, hitting 6 parked vehicles in the middle of the night. My car was one of them and was totaled.
This would be highly beneficial not only for the residents of Valley Ave, but also for any drivers that use Valley Ave for transit. People speed far too often on our road, making backing out of parking spots a very risky task, and cars use the middle turn lane to pass which is extremely dangerous.
I live in the townhomes on valley Ave. I have been here less than a month and have already had my car hit while parked and the other car hit the condo next to mine. There has to be changes made to help increase safety.
My family owns a condo where a woman crashed through the wall a few feet from where my son was sitting. Recently, someone crashed into a condo in the next building. This must be taken seriously.
Lived on Valley for 7 years-this has been a constant issue and one largely ignored by the city of Homewood. All residents of Homewood deserve the same attention and care, not just the ones in overpriced, single family homes!
My daughter lives in one of the condos on valley ave. It’s very dangerous to back into traffic that often times you can not even see when she leaves for college. Any measures that the city can take alleviate safety concerns on this busy road will be greatly appreciated.

Our daughter lives in this area and we visit often. My husband is 73 and I’m 66. It definitely causes anxiety for me (on arrival & departure) to park on Valley Avenue. No one likes speed bumps BUT they do alleviate speeding, which is a major problem on this busy road.
