This is a petition for the city of Kelowna to recognize the increasing danger to pedestrians using the crosswalk on Rutland Rd on the corner of Benchview Rd.
This crosswalk is used by children attending Belgo Elementary as well as South Rutland Elementary. This crosswalk is also used to get to the bus stop on Rutland Rd on the left (West) side.
We are petitioning the City of Kelowna to put some enforcement measure at this crosswalk, nothing less than a flashing light signalling the cars to stop.

Drivers speed down Rutland road everyday and more often than not fail to stop for kids/adults wanting to cross. I have almost been hit crossing with my children and have seen many others almost be hit. It is a huge problem and its only getting worse.
Yesterday there were 6 kids waiting at the side of the crosswalk and two cars went straight past them without stopping.
This is one of two dangerous crosswalks that provide access to Belgo school. The other one is at Venus Road. Today as I waited to turn left onto Venus Road, a car sped past me - on the right side, in the bike lane, directly through the crosswalk. BOTH of these crossings need to be reviewed immediately for safety concerns!
Make it safer for these kids and parents. The deserve it. It should be mandatory. Never mind putting money towards gardens in the city, put it towards the safety of the public.
I've seen with my own eyes this crosswalk is not safe. My kids know it. My husband and I know it. And you should see it in the winter. It's not enough to teach my kids to be safe and look both ways. They are doing their part. Those cars simple do not see the cross walk in time to stop!!!
Time for this issue to be addressed.

Because of the corner right before this sidewalk, drivers can be caught off guard at this crosswalk. It's very busy and the drivers just don't seem to react. A pedestrian controlled light with notification lights farther back before the corner are a must!
