Recently, Sycamore Elementary was faced with several threatening notes placed throughout campus. While the Claremont Police Department does not view this as a credible threat, there is substantial history in the U.S. of on-campus attacks and future precautions must be made.
Sycamore is a beautiful, free-spirited, family-friendly community and in order to preserve these values we must first maintain the safety of our children. For without the feeling of safety, these values cannot be truly embraced.
There are many steps that can be taken to make Sycamore a safer school. One step would be to secure all entrances to campus. If you are interested in making this happen, please sign this petition and let it be known how important this issue is to all of us within the Sycamore community. The goal is to really just get a dialogue going and brainstorm various ideas.

I have been reading through your comments and it is clear that so many of us feel unsettled walking our children to the gate each morning. I am currently reaching out to school administrators to demand a meeting where we can finally sit down and discuss securing these entrances.

Seeing this grow makes me feel a little less alone when I walk my daughter to the gates each morning. It is clear I am not the only one who loses sleep thinking about the vulnerability of our campus.

I'm definitely in support of surveillance cameras, and I'd be happy to contribute financially. I'm sure others would be as well!
I surprise there is no surveillance camera in entrances of school. We should monitor come and go for safety. That is basic. I also volunteer to watch kids during their lunch break.
Thank you for this. I think: 1. All the gate should be secured, 2. There need gate or wall added in the main entrance and the space between mpr and room5, 3. We need CCTV in and around the campus.
Thank you for generating this petition to ensure the safety of the children at Sycamore! There have been incidents of violence at the school as recent as last year (apparently a parent verbally assaulted a child and continued to intimidate her the rest of the year). Please consider gating the school, using video surveillance, and limiting the campus to paid employees only with very few exceptions in order to take the increase in violence seriously. Thank you!
I agree that we need surveillance. However, instead of gating the front entrance, I'm hoping for less invasive procedures - perhaps volunteer parental monitoring, or morning sign-ins (although it's understood that this would be a tedious process each day). In any case, I am signing because *something* is needed, and soon.

I'm not signing any petition. Sycamore is the safest school I've ever been involved with in over 32 years of dealing with youth. We go to Sycamore precisely because there are parents on campus throughout the day, every day. In spite of the misinformation being spread by others, there has been no violence on campus, other than when my kid is a knucklehead and kicks someone in the shin. As a parent I deal with it and I thank and respect any other adult who happens to share in the parenting of my sometimes obstinate kids, should the need arise. If you want cameras, feel free to walk around with your phone and film all day long, as you don't have that privilege on other campuses in Claremont. Cameras across the world don't prevent anything, they only help you catch people. Are we having a problem catching people? Is that the real issue? (help me catch my kids misbehaving please!) Everyone in Claremont has the luxury of choice. If you don't want to attend Sycamore, you don't have to. Raise your child in a bubble at a different school. 1984

I agree that surveillance cameras are a must. Doors to classrooms need to be kept closed when school is in session. We need some social media tools to keep everyone updated during times of possible threat, such a Sycamore Parents FaceBook Page and Twitter account. We also need school administrators and the police to be willing to hold a forum when asked to directly answer parents questions, as should have happened Tuesday night.
