I'm not signing any petition. Sycamore is the safest school I've ever been involved with in over 32 years of dealing with youth. We go to Sycamore precisely because there are parents on campus throughout the day, every day. In spite of the misinformation being spread by others, there has been no violence on campus, other than when my kid is a knucklehead and kicks someone in the shin. As a parent I deal with it and I thank and respect any other adult who happens to share in the parenting of my sometimes obstinate kids, should the need arise. If you want cameras, feel free to walk around with your phone and film all day long, as you don't have that privilege on other campuses in Claremont. Cameras across the world don't prevent anything, they only help you catch people. Are we having a problem catching people? Is that the real issue? (help me catch my kids misbehaving please!) Everyone in Claremont has the luxury of choice. If you don't want to attend Sycamore, you don't have to. Raise your child in a bubble at a different school. 1984

Please keep in mind that that the city name that appears next to the name of the person who is commenting is gathered from the location of that person when they are signing in and does not necessarily reflect what city they live in or what community they belong to. People may be commenting from their workplace. They may be traveling on business when they login and comment. I don't know that we should broadly dismiss anyone's comments because of the location tag. Here we are speculating over whether who says something has skin in the game. Wouldn't a meeting at the school between parents, administrators, and police the day after the threat was announced have prevented what this is now degenerating into?

Maureen I understand your annoyance with the comment (as I too was bothered by it). I have personally addressed it and had done so on the site as well. Lets not forget the reason for the petition, keeping our kids safe.

I have quoted this post because it is the reason I am avoiding this petition. This is a person who does not live in our community and has no direct knowledge of where anyone's heads are located. I KNOW there is not a single person on the staff at Sycamore who is anywhere close to lazy. I know these people and I KNOW they love my kids and would do anything for them. Having an outsider insulting our staff and our community is not the way to get the community on board.

I think cameras are a must. If this actually was a 5th grader seeking attention, had cameras been in place, this situation would've been dispensed with privately. I believe there is a compromise that can be made regarding fences, one that keeps our children safe but doesn't turn the front of the school into something that resembles a prison; it's not an either or proposition. I look forward to a forum where ideas, opinions and facts can be exchanged thoughtfully and respectfully.

I think it is very important for theft and other issues for the school to be protected by video cameras at all times.

We need updated security including cameras and other surveillance. Many school districts have their own police or have a number of officers assigned to protect the schools. By protecting the children, we will be protecting the Sycamore spirit. By do nothing, we run the risk of an event happening, and that will certainly destroy any spirit the school has. I hope that all this is a misguided prank by some older kids, but it is also an opportunity to see how we can do things better in light of recent school violence. Let's be proactive!

Thanks for starting this conversation, Larissa! I'm wondering if there might be some offline space for discussing safety concerns and potential creative and practical solutions to increasing safety at Sycamore as well. Perhaps teachers and administrators could hold a public meeting in the near future to have face-to-face dialogue or set some time and space aside during the Courtyard Picnic? It seems like it would be possible to collectively think about increasing safety while also maintaining all the special and unique aspects of Sycamore.

how about a trained teacher on staff with firearms training and a sign that says this schools is armed and will be defended by anyone who attempts to enter premises with weapon !!! Bet that would be a deterrent !

1) I support the policies of the professionals running Sycamore School.
2) I believe there is a policy of securing gated entrances after school has begun..
3) I consider Sycamore and Claremont at large to be very safe communities.
4) I see no reason to further react to what were probably the misplaced actions of a 6th grade boy.
5) Maybe a teachers can identify the knuckehead through hand writing recognization and apply a stiff slap on the wrist (metaphorically).

I agree that surveillance cameras are a must. Doors to classrooms need to be kept closed when school is in session. We need some social media tools to keep everyone updated during times of possible threat, such a Sycamore Parents FaceBook Page and Twitter account. We also need school administrators and the police to be willing to hold a forum when asked to directly answer parents questions, as should have happened Tuesday night.

Thank you for generating this petition to ensure the safety of the children at Sycamore! There have been incidents of violence at the school as recent as last year (apparently a parent verbally assaulted a child and continued to intimidate her the rest of the year). Please consider gating the school, using video surveillance, and limiting the campus to paid employees only with very few exceptions in order to take the increase in violence seriously. Thank you!

We live in a time where safety is a big issue for schools and in general - let's put the kids safety first. Also some kids (and parents) may be disturbed by what they have heard so it would be good to have an optional assembly or counseling on hand- as well as a consistent message that does not allow rumors to take hold.
