To Administration, Teachers, and other faculty

Although school has only just begun it seems that Marian has changed, and not in a good way. As Senior Class Student Council President, I feel that it is my duty to speak for the student body and express our extreme disinterest in the new uniform policy. Starting first with the shoe policy, I do not understand as to why we are limited to three color choices. We should be able to wear what we feel is comfortable and any color that we like. It's not like we are publicly displaying our student body to the general public to be judged on the fact that we all are looking uniform. You have to understand that you are dealing with 14-18 year olds that probably won't follow most of these new rules. Writing hundreds of uniform notices the first day of school may work to help enforce the policy for a little bit, but to be honest within the next month kids will probably be back to wearing shoes that do not follow policy. Next on my list of changes that we see unfair is that we are not allowed to wear sweatshirts over our polos. I understand why and how you, the administration, want to protect the crest of the sweater, but to be honest a little logo on the polo that says "Hurricanes" has to be shown? We believe that we should be able to wear a Marian sweatshirt representing the same thing as that of the Hurricanes logo. I still believe that foreign sweatshirts such as sports teams and other things should still be banned. I say this for the sake of how comfortable our students can be. The option of wearing a long sleeve solid color athletic shirt under the polo is a good idea, but again you're going to have kids that aren't going to cooperate with such changes. And for my final request, I am confused to as why the snack bar in the lunchroom closes five minutes early. Many students rely on it being open at the end of the period to grab a quick snack for after school. Most of our student body is very upset with these changes and would like to go back to how Marian was in the previous years. Thank you and I hope you take these suggestions into account.

Evan Caselton

Senior Class Student Council President

I am currently gathering all of your uniform feedback to present directly to the administration. Please text three of your classmates and tell them to add their names to this list today. We need a unified front if we want to change these restrictive policies.

The momentum behind this petition proves the administration cannot ignore our frustration with the new uniform rules any longer. Post the link on your Facebook page and text three friends right now to keep the pressure mounting.

The fact is that all of you are so distracted by this "problem" that you forget what the reason is behind having uniforms. They act as a status symbol that says you are a member of the Marian Central Family. A family that holds both the faculty and student body to high standards through academics, appropriate actions, and appropriate attire. If you think those standards are outdated, then you have no business attending Marian.

These policies are not only useless; they are genuinely counterproductive. Uniform policy should exist only to discourage distraction. By enacting these new rules, Marian is only creating more stress, distractions, and meaningless issues for students to worry about. Good on Evan for taking initiative as Class President to represent his peers. Any reasonable establishment would rescind these unnecessary policies.

I understand making it a cleaner look but this is not the way to do it and they are making Marian a school known for there family aspect feel like a prison not a school where people want to be

As a Marian alumn, these rules are really ridiculous. Two years ago we didn't have all these restrictions. It's unfair to start randomly imposing these rules now.

Totally agree. It's very reasonable to teach kids discipline with a dress code at a young age; however, once those rules impinge on there ability to remain comfortable in their learning environment, they have clearly gone too far. Keep the students at Marian proud of their school; don't push them to the point to where they hate their high school because of petty rules

As a former Marian student, I believe President Caselton has a great plan in place to improve Marian Central. The uniform policy has long been inconsistent, confusing, and not beneficial to the student. I believe in his policy that Marian sweatshirts should be ok to wear. I also agree no outside sweatshirts with inappropriate writing, pictures, or symbols should be allowed. Every student in the school will look presentable. The shoe policy is quite rough and I understand the students' frustration. Do we really need to focus on uniforms more than academic instruction? Outstanding points from a strong leader.
