KELTON BANK & GLENCAPLE ROAD, DUMFRIES - PETITION FOR SAFER ROADS

We, the undersigned call for Dumfries and Galloway Council to make our road safer for pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users on the (B725) Tourist & Cyclist Route/Burns' Trail, Glencaple Road, Dumfries, especially around the Kelton Bank area.

1. Upgrade the road and drainage system on the (B725) Glencaple Road: Cut away the verges as they are taking over road space and deal with the corrosion in the parts of the road where it has resulted in less road space over the years for traffic to pass safely on both sides of the road. Renew the drainage system as it is no longer capable of performing adequately.

2. Manage the flooding problem on the roads which makes them hazardous due to the slippery mud deposits left behind.

3. Lower the speed limit from 60 mph to at least 40 mph from the boundary of Kelton Village to beyond the houses at Kelton Bank to ensure the safety of vehicular and pedestrian access onto the Glencaple Road from speeding traffic coming round the bend. There is an increasing number of articulated lorries and very large tractors accessing this road that is barely wide enough for cars to pass safely as they take up the majority of the road. To also enable safe passage on the bend to vulnerable users, both on bicycles and on foot along with traffic.

All of the above have an impact on the safety of the residents at Kelton Bank and beyond and all vulnerable road users including drivers, pedestrians and cyclists.

Please sign our petition thanks.

I have been staring at the potholes near the bank again and honestly it is getting dangerous just to walk the dog. The council people keep ignoring my emails about that drainage issue but I am not going anywhere because that bend is a total death trap for anyone on a bike.

I honestly never thought we would see this kind of momentum when I first wrote this out on my laptop late at night. It feels strange seeing so many people agreeing that the flooding and those narrow corners just do not make sense anymore especially with the tractors flying through the bend like that.

Reducing and enforcing the speed limit would be most effective. Reactive digital signage is known to work well in other places locally. Not convinced about the proposal to cut away the verges - wouldn't that make things harder for walkers, make drainage more challenging, impact on wildlife and even encourage motorists to go faster still?

Cars are far to fast on this road for a national cycle route, very wary taking my kids on it and I live I Kelton so don't have any option, any reduction would be a bonus and the drainage is a major issue in winter.

Totally unsafe area when travelling between Glencaple and Dumfries, as a cyclist on that stretch I have been very narrowly missed by cars going a full 60mph as they turn the blind corner. Am lucky still to be here to sign this after one particular person on their mobile phone swerved after just spotting me in time.

I would love to have taken a walk from our holiday cottage off the Glencaple Rd.to Kelton Bank when we visited but dared not as the traffic was whizzing along and I wanted to survive.

My son and his girlfriend had a nasty accident due to flooding on the b725 Glencaple road, as this didn't drain away the person coming in the opposite direction hit them head on, they were both injured and I guess it could of been worse but the next person may not be so lucky it could fatal

I live at Kelton Bank and take my life in my hands when going to my parking space and cutting the hedge .Also its a nightmare driving from my parking space on to the Glencaple road.i love cycling but have given up doing so at 75 years on the Glencaple road but feel confident in cycling on less dangerous highways

As a cyclist I find this road particularly dangerous. Cars travel at high speeds and there is a lot of large, slower traffic too. Cyclists and pedestrians are very vulnerable
