Caloundra's attractiveness as a tourist destination and an amazing place to live is strongly tied to quality open spaces, great places to walk and ride and community facilities in the centre of the town. The central areas of Caloundra area should be protected, maintained and enhanced with quality to preserve the amenity of the town and encourage more trips to be made by walking and riding.

The existing Caloundra Corridor Upgrade Project proposes new roads through park space and widening of existing roads to 4-6 lanes, in an area and abundant in community facilities.

We petition the Council to consider the following alternative option for the project.

  • A smaller scale road project that provides a maximum of two traffic lanes between intersections
  • A maximum speed limit of 50km/h
  • Low speed intersections, with single lane roundabouts with raised crossings for pedestrians
  • High quality walking and cycling connections throughout the area.

Updates

December 18, 2020

The feedback regarding our vision for Caloundra has been consistently thoughtful and highlights the deep connection the community feels toward our public spaces. I am currently compiling these experiences to present a formal case that emphasizes the long-term value of maintaining a walkable town center. Further discussions with local representatives are in progress to ensure these specific alternatives remain under consideration.

December 18, 2020

The project has reached a significant level of public interest that confirms our community values the character of Caloundra. This momentum demonstrates that residents want a town designed for people rather than just through traffic. We will continue to advocate for these necessary changes to the corridor plan.

Happy to have roads and traffic improved, but with slow speed and a bigger and safer space for bicycles and pedestrians. No need for a 4 lane new road.

Consider on/off ramps off Sugarbag Road instead of taking valuable green space.

This seems like a crazy idea! A lot of people use Nicklin Way and Caloundra Rd to get to Bunnings, will they take this proposed road and many sets of traffic lights to go via the CBD to Bunnings? Wanton destruction for very little gain!

A more cost effective way to achieve less congestion is surely available, Council should be more up front and get more ideas before wasting any more taxpayers money !

Too many issues with this project. Bring on a real consultation process with the designers & decision makers, not just the council lackies there for show.

Desirable to encourage more active transport & work towards less vehicular traffic using current infrastructure.

Worst decision I have seen by council. What are they thinking?
