I want to thank you in advance for allowing me the opportunity to tell you about Country Kids Camp. First, I will start with the basic facts. Country Kids Camp is a summer day camp that runs 15 days from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. The camp is a 501C3 that not only hosts camp in the summer, but sponsors over 900 Walton County children who are in need at Christmas through the use of camp funds, donations and private sponsors.
I started this camp 12 years ago as a way to encourage less screen time and more outdoor time. We pride ourselves in allowing children to be children. They play in the dirt, they play with friends, they play in water, they eat popsicles, they learn social skills such as getting along with others, taking turns, and learning how to be good Samaritans. Being a good Samaritan is a lesson we take very seriously at camp and we instill in these children what it means, what it looks like, and how it can change a persons whole life when we are kind.
During camp, we encourage children to participate in Dunk for A Dollar. This is a fundraiser we do for a Walton County child that is battling childhood cancer. Last year we donated $3000 to a little boy named Dax. If you could just see the pride and the joy on these children’s faces when they realize what they have done for someone close to their age; someone they can relate to on many levels; but yet someone who doesn’t have the everyday life that they get to enjoy.
Summer should be filled with children laughing and playing. This summer, even more so than ever before. Our children need this camp. They need to know the world is gonna be ok. They need to know that the life of a child is filled with way more than worrying about a pandemic.
It’s only 15 days every summer. I am asking that you please consider supporting us. We do not want any conflict, hurt feelings, or problems. We simply want to provide local children with a safe, fun, and Christian atmosphere.

I just refreshed the page and saw we hit twenty-five hundred names which honestly blows my mind because I really thought this would just be for the local neighborhood folks. It feels like the whole world is waking up to why playing in the dirt matters and I have been sitting here reading your comments with a massive smile on my face (my coffee is cold but who cares).

one hundred people just signed this thing and I am honestly kind of shocked that so many of you care about keeping the camp dirt and popsicles alive. I was just looking at the list of names and it makes my heart feel so full thinking about how much these kids love playing outdoors without screens.

I was just sitting here staring at the screen and realized how much this has grown even though I only started with a simple idea about dirt and popsicles. It feels like the whole community is finally waking up to the magic we create out there in the grass. My brain is spinning with all the possibilities now that people are actually listening and honestly it is just overwhelming in the best possible way.

WGHS has worked with Shelly Shellnut for many years. They donate to many families in our community during Thanksgiving and Christmas season. Most of these families have nothing. Please let them continue this much needed camp in Walton County.
I went when I was a kid, then continued to work there once I was older so the kids could have the same experience I was able to have. Just from experience this is where kids can go to have fun and feel safe because many of them do not have the best home life.
Mrs. Shellnut has been doing this camp for over 13 years now and only now it’s an issue? I just don’t get it. I’ve gone to this camp ever since I was little and I finally got the chance this year to actually work it and give other kids the experiences I had.
My grandchildren love this camp. They look more forward to going to this camp than they do the beach. Please grant them the permits they need to continue being such a positive experience for the children of Walton County and surrounding areas.
Country Kids Camp is one of the best things about our community. It's run by people who love our children and grandchildren. Shelley and crew offer their campers outdoor opportunities that strengthen minds and bodies. Why would anyone oppose this??
Let them kids play outside !!! And learn what they can accomplish more than just pressing buttons on video games !!!

This camp is so important to many children and families of Walton county! I have seen children with special needs and disabilities overcome obstacles and challenges while attending Country Kids Camp. Please, let ALL children go outside and PLAY!
