My son was so excited to begin kindergarten. But I was shocked to learn that he would only have 20 minutes of recess for the entire school day. The research is clear that children are learning when they play. Students are more socially, physically, and academically successful when allowed more recess. Let's help our children get what we know is best for them.

Working at school for 20 years I deffently see this. Our state is pushing to Much on our kids they need 20 mins morning and afternoon to be kids
I'm a parent and I know that mental energy comes with physical activity. I see it everyday, when my boys come in the house bursting with ideas and thoughts and plans after an afternoon of playing outside. Why wouldn't we make it possible to maximize the benefits of exercise and play during the school day?
Recess isn't just "killing time." Kids learn many valuable life lessons on the playground, like negotiating, sharing, supporting each other, etc. In addition, we should be encouraging our children to be physically active.
At my daughter's private school, they have two separate outdoor play times; one in the morning and one after lunch. The kids at that school are happy and focused. They have wonderful results. I would hope that public school children can experience this, too.
One can look to the changes at Eagle Mountain Elementary School in Fort Worth Texas as evidence that increased recess positively affects academic outcomes. They tripled the amount of recess time, from 20 minutes to an hour, and their students are behaving better and scoring higher.
Let kids be kids.
Kids have better attention in the classroom when they are able to burn off extra energy. I support this 100%

The 1st letter my grandson wrote at school said "Dear Grammy, I love kindergarten because we have 2 recesses." That lasted about a week.
