The school board added 15 minutes to the instructional day, which will allow the 2016-2017 school year to end May 25, 2017 with 173 days of instruction for students.

In this petition, we are requesting that at least the Kindergarten and First Grade have the extra 15 minutes as free play. Not movie watching, not directed activity, but free play...outside whenever possible. There is a lot of solid data that supports free play as having a greater impact on test scores than additional instructional time...

• On the playground, children exercise leadership, teach games to one another, take turns, and learn to resolve conflicts. • In a free choice situation, children learn negotiation skills in order to keep the play going.

PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION IF YOU AGREE WITH MORE FREE PLAY FOR OUR YOUNG CHILDREN!!!

August 3, 2016

The stories shared in the comments illustrate how deeply our children value their time to explore and move. It is clear that many of you share the conviction that unstructured play is fundamental to early development rather than a luxury to be sacrificed for a longer calendar. I am currently compiling your experiences into a formal request for the board members to review.

Reaching this level of support confirms that many of us prioritize the development of our children beyond traditional classroom hours. It is heartening to see such a strong consensus regarding the necessity of unstructured time for the youngest students in our system.

My youngest is starting Kinder this year. It's going to be a long day for him to adjust to from preschool. Now that it's even longer, I believe there should be more play time for them, as they are only 5 years old!!

I taught 1st grade for 9 years in Cy Fair and I truly believe they need this extra time for free play.

I definitely feel the younger children should be active rather than stuck at a desk.

Absolutely! Children (and adults) need more play and exercise. It's good for the brain and body, and increases work efficiency.

I believe all grades should have an additional free time play.

The research states...let them play.
