This petition aims to have the transfer, ownership and carry of pepper spray legalised throughout Belgium.
Why is it needed?
Belgium is the fourth most violent country in Europe after the UK, Austria and Sweden, the only thing which these countries (and another five of the ten most violent European countries) have in common is the fact that their citizens are completely defenceless when faced with criminals who will not hesitate to use their physical stature and/or illegally obtained weapons to gain the upper hand when attacking innocent individuals.
Furthermore pepper spray would allow people (and highly vulnerable individuals such as the elderly in particular) to defend themselves within their own homes, the home being the one place where one should always feel safe from aggression.
Why pepper spray?
1. Pepper spray is an equaliser, it allows the physically weak to effectively defend themselves against stronger assailants.
2. Pepper spray is designed to stop an attack without causing serious harm to either party, this will lead to a decrease in serious injuries and deaths resulting from crime.
3. Several pepper sprays contain marking substances which will make it much easier for the police to rapidly apprehend the perpetrators of violent crimes.
4. Pepper spray comes in several forms, each presenting different situational advantages; aerosols who are best for defence against multiple aggressors, streams who are best for defence against a single aggressor and foam (or gel) which is ideal for home-defence.

About time. I work late shifts and walk to the train station in the dark every night. Walking alone in Brussels is getting way too scary these days.
