St Modwen, who are charge of the redevelopment of The Leegate Centre in Lee SE12 held a consultation event recently concerning the proposed opening of an Asda in the Leegate Centre. The implications of this going ahead are enormous for Lee and the surrounding area. Apart from the obvious traffic problems that another supermarket will bring to an already incredibly busy area, there are the long term implications for an area in need of some positive regeneration. I am sure most people would agree that the Leegate centre is in need of redevelopment, however Lee does not need another supermarket. The concern is not only the obvious traffic nightmares at the crossroads of Lee Green and Eltham Road, as much as the impact on the community in terms of the building of another large supermarket being the only way a local area can be regenerated. Surely we can do better than that? We all know things are tight but surely there must be funds to do something more imaginative and create something lasting for our community,especially our young people. Many people in the community have suggested a leisure centre, an arts centre or park with skateboard track, somewhere for young people to go and keep fit and active. We have an abundance of talent in the area and many creative people, so why not put this abundant talent to good use. At the moment we have a leisure centre in Lewisham, which is quite far from Lee and an expensive David Lloyd gym in Kidbrooke which only a few can afford so there really is a great opportunity here to develop Lee Green and in doing so create employment and opportunites for everyone. The simple fact of the matter is the community does not need another supermarket. We have a Sainsbury's in Lee Green , a new supermarket opening in Kidbrooke, lots of shops and supermarkets in Lewisham. What Lee Green needs is a hub where the community can take part in healthy and positive activity.
